Vickie, my memories of Paul and I as young sports guys on WSUI, University of Iowa, in the late-'50s are as fresh as if it were yesterday. You might recall that Bobbi and I met you and Paul many years ago as we traveled through your area. As everyone has already said, Paul was the kind of person the rest of us would like to have been. In our days on campus we had a wonderful rapport, but in the studio, where we did a dual prime time sportscast each night, it should have been called the Dorkie and Doofus show. I was two years older than Paul, with more experience, so I should have been a role model. But we discovered that we could not look at each other without laughing, no matter how hard we tried. Many of the listeners on the Oldest Station West of the Mississippi thought it hilarious when we broke up and couldn't read the news. Some others, like the program director, didn't think it so funny. Since we alternated reading the sports stories of the day, the one who was not reading would turn his back, or bury his face behind the copy, or walk away until it was his turn, but all failed. That newscast was much anticipated each night by many listeners who wrote the station, and there were few nights that we didn't try to stifle a snicker, or outright laugh. We couldn't explain the effect we had on each other. Well, those are the kinds of things memories are made of. Paul stayed with sports and went on to become the kind of professional everyone loved and admired. I should have been so fortunate. I share your loss, and the grief his death has caused the State of Arkansas. It was only a year ago that I lost another air-mate, Pete Taylor, in Des Moines, Iowa, whose death elicited the same reaction in Iowa as did Paul's in Arkansas. God bless you and the family. Like so many of the others who have talked about missing Paul, I too can remember my dad turning down the TV volume and turning up Paul's play by play. You always knew it was fall in Arkansas when you heard his voice. In moving to California, I was not able to see many games last year but I could hear Paul's voice on the internet and it made me feel more at home. We will all miss Paul and what he meant to us Arkansans. The angels are rejoicing, however, with this great addition to Heaven. God Bless your family.

As for being a Razorback fan from the beginning of my existence, I thank my parents for raising me that way. As for getting to know you while working for the University of Arkansas S.I.D. office, I thank my major. As for the way you've touched my life in so many ways over the years, I thank God. I'll miss you deeply and there will never be another Arkansas touchdown that doesn't remind of you. Thank You for everything!

I first knew Paul when I was the assistant sports information director here at the University of Alabama, and then later when I was SID at UT Chattanooga. He was always very helpful and went out of his way to shower me with acts of kindness. Even though it might be a few years between meetings, whenever I was around Paul, it seemed as though it just yesterday that I had last seen him. Beyond his greatness as an announcer (and I thought he was the best play-by-play man in the SEC), his greatness as a human being is what I will remember most. Rest well, my old friend.

I met Mr Eells in the early 1970's when he was at WSM in Nashville. He was 1st class all the way and was loved by many in this area. We hated to see him leave in 1978 to go to Arkansas. He was missed. Now, sadly, we have to say goodbye to him again. This time for good. Paul, you will be missed!

In my 29 years of life, I've only heard Mr. Paul Eells voice each season during my beloved Razorback games. After leaving Arkansas 6 years ago, I missed being able to watch the Razorback games but would feel back at home when I logged on-line to listen to the ballgame and heard his voice. I know that I will miss him dearly this year and every year from here on out. My thoughts and prayers are with the Eells' family and the state of Arkansas for they have truely lost an icon.

We were always delighted to share a few moments with him, especially since my husband and I have literally grown up with Paul, listening to him as the "Voice of the Razorbacks." We are truly saddened by his passing and hope you find comfort and solace in family and friends, and even in strangers like us who felt we knew him. I was a student at Hendrix College in the late '80s. We were/are a very small school and at that time we had no full-time sports information department. Those duties were usually handled by an eager, sports loving kid on work-study and for a couiple of years back then I was that kid. It was my responsibility to contact all media after our home basketball games to report the final score. I remember calling Channel 7 the first time and actually getting Paul Ells on the phone. I had no idea that the anchor would actually be the one answering the phone! Anyway, I gave the score and he was SO NICE and excited. He made me feel that his sports report was not going to be complete unless he got the score of the Hendrix College basketball game. He made me feel that way every single time I called for the two year period that I held that position. It made a great impact on me as far as showing me how to treat people. He was a great example for us all. Thank you.

Paul is the model of how a person should be. I get frustrated with some people who claim to be religious but don't show it by their actions. Paul reinforces my belief that God is real and God is good. Paul Eels was a true man of God. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Eells at a Little Rock Razorback game several years ago. Our son was 10 at the time and Paul took several moments to talk to him and encourage him to continue to play the many different sports he was involved in. As avid Razorback fans, Paul can never be replaced as the voice of the Razorbacks. We will miss him greatly. God bless the Eells family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Even though it was the farthest thing from his mind, he succeeded in becoming an icon in this state but more importantly, he was a member of thousands of families. While he won’t be with us physically, I know he will be watching the games from above and if we all listen closely, I know that when the Razorbacks score we will be able to hear him say, “TOUCHDOWN ARKANSAS, OH MY!”

We wish to extend our sincere and heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the Eells family in this time of loss, sorrow and grief. We have been severely shaken and personally stricken by his untimely death. He will be sorely missed and each subsequent Razorback ballgame will now be just a reminder of how much we have lost and that will never be the same without his play-by-play that made Paul not only our favorite but all of Arkansas' favorite sportscaster. It is as if a member of our own family has suddenly been taken from us and in a way, he was as much a member of our family as any other relative, whether by blood or marriage. We have enjoyed his company for his entire tenure at KATV Channel 7. His constantly smiling contenance will be our most precious memory whenever we recall with much nostalgia his signature style of commentary and distinctive vocal style of "Calling the Hogs." Please accept our condolences and always remember that "He never truly dies who is not forgotten" and because of that Paul Eells will live forever in the hearts and minds of all men now and forever more. There is a poem that I think expresses most completely the way in which Paul himself would wish us to remember him and we post it here in his memory: Do not stand by my grave and weep by Mary E. Frye Do not stand at my grave and weep: I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the softly falling snow, I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the field of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the grateful rush Of beautiful birds in circling flight. I am the star-shine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom. I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing. I am in each lovely thing. So do not stand by my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die. We will love and revere his memory always. Sincerely, Jeffrey and Viola Jones

I was looking for something on an aisle and Rett was sitting in the shopping cart. I heard a woman's voice say "Paul, look at this baby!". I turned around and the couple was Paul and Vickie Eells! Mr. Eells smiled at me and Rett and said, "He sure is a cutie!". They went on about their business and so did we, but I will never forget that small, sweet moment ! Vickie, Jennifer, Traci, Brandon: I never had the priviledge of meeting Paul here on earth, but I have heard how much of a gentle loving man he was. I praise the fact that he knew our Lord and Savior and I will get to meet him someday. Like many others, while watching the game I would turn down the TV and listen to him on the radio. Keep leaning on God and His strength and know that many are praying for you and your families. I am sorry you are going through this. My heart cries with yours. Your Sister in Christ, DeAnn York

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. Paul was a wonderful man and a true ambassador for the state of Arkansas. His familiar voice will be missed both on the air and in locations all over the state where he would carry on conversations with the friends that he had just met for the first times. If as individuals in this great state, we can learn one thing from this tragic event, it should be to try and live a life with no enemies, because that is what Paul was able to accomplish. God Bless the Eells family and just a thought for Paul that I know he'd enjoy: Woooooooooo, Pig! Sooie! and thank you. The Webster Family McRae, AR

I grew up in Oklahoma, so often the radio was our only option. I never met the man personally, but all the kind words that have been spoken all week construct an image of a very gracious man; exactly the way I had pictured all along. We all feel like we lost a friend. We have allowed Paul to come into our homes for many years. Paul is the only voice of our beloved Razorbacks that I have ever known. Imagining the Razorbacks without Paul is impossible right now. It's tough to lose somebody like this, but I know it's even tougher for the Eells family. Even though Paul felt like our family he wasn't, he felt like our friend we were no more that acquaitances. To the family I am sorry b/c I know that Paul was a good and genuine man. I met him one time and it was obvious then that he was a man of integrity. We mourn a loss, but we know that you have a whole in your heart that will never be replaced. To the family I am reminded of an old hymnal. "There's not a friend like the lowly Jesus, no not one, no not one." In your time of trial He is there to comfort you, and He will be there for you. Depend on Him and He will see you through. Find Him and Mr. Eells isn't gone forever but just a time because I feel that he went to heaven and I know that you can see him again.

My sister and I grew up listening to the voice of Paul Eells. I guess you could say that we were born Razorback fans. Maybe it was the matching little Razorback outfits we wore home, or the "Big Game" that was on when we were born, which my mother insisted she had to listen to during delivery, while at the same time telling the doctor to hurry up and get these girls out of here so I can teach them to call the hogs. Even though neither of us knew him personally, we felt like he was a part of our lives since we love the Razorbacks as he did & always enjoyed his enthusiam when announcing any kind of sports event. Ms Vickie & the Eells family, Our hearts are so heavy with grief and we can only imagine how hard this is for you but there is a plan that is bigger than any of us and this is the Master's plan. Sometimes it's hard, very hard to understand and maybe never is but we have to trust GOD and try to realize the importance of this part of the ultimate plan for all of us here in our temporary home. You will see Paul again and he will have wonderful stories to share with all of you of his glorious trip. He had to make this trip alone but someday very soon, you will be reunited with your husband, father, & grandfather. Be patient and strong as Paul would want and hold on to the fact that there will be a homecoming. God bless you all & the entire state of Arkansas is praying for peace for your family. I am so deeply sadden about the death of Paul Eells! There will never be another Paul Eells at all. No one can take his place any where. He is the only one who can call the HOGS AND TOUCHDOWN RAZORBACKS!! When football starts in a couple of weeks there will be a big void left because Paul will not be there but in our hearts. May God be with you all and please Lean on God because he is the one and only one who can actually help you to get through this tough time. Even when you go through the phase of getting mad at your husband and father that is normal so don't think your being a bad person because your not. So If you go off on someone in the next couple of weeks or months just go somewhere and say a prayer to GOD and he will help you get through it. Trust me I know I lost my Father in 2001 and my big brother in 1993. So I know what your going to be going through. Just Lean On GOD HE WILL SEE YOU THROUGH!! For many years we have enjoyed watching Paul on TV and listening to him on the radio. We met him in Atlanta at the SEC championship game a few years ago, and visited with him for a few minutes (just before he was to go on the air) When asked if he had a minute for a picture, without hesitation he walked over, put his arm around me, smiled and wanted to know where we were from and if we were having a good time. He was one in a million, who will be missed by millions. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Mrs. Eells and Family, Let me start out by expressing my deepest sympathy and prayers to you and your family and friends. My dad and Paul were pretty good friends because daddy was such a HUGE ARKANSAS FAN and a fan of most sports in general. Also because of the WONDERFUL CHRISTIAN EXAMPLE that PAUL ALWAYS WAS....Daddy was one of those fans that would turn the tv down and listen to Pauls' TOUCHDOWN ARKANSAS! OH MY!! in all of the games too....I didn't watch/listen to a lot of games with daddy because he got so excited and a little loud for me but I would always stop and listen for Pauls' TOUCHDOWN ARKANSAS!! OH MY!! from another room ans it always gave me a chuckle and a smile. I had the PRIVILEGE of meeting Paul one time several years ago through my dad and I will never forget his genuine smile and his genuine interest in meeting me even though I was a kid and didn't know a lot about sports. I also talked to him on the phone one day and he was very helpful and genuine in trying to help me in this call too. Tam Taylor Magnolia Ar

Although there was always a slight delay on the television, it was worth it just to hear him on the radio. I knew there would be a day that his reign of “The Voice of the Razorbacks” would end, but never so tragically. He seemed to be a wonderful man that touched so many lives in this state and others. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I will be wearing my Razorback attire and waving Razorback flags on Friday to show my respect to a real legend. Paul, I have always heard that the measure of a person's life is made, in great part, by the positive influence that he/she had on others; whether or not the world is a better place by that person having lived. While I never had the privilege of having met you, I have friends who did and they confirm all the wonderful things that everyone has expressed about you. Certainly we are poorer for your having left us; however, the people of Arkansas will forever be immeasureably richer for your having passed our way. To a man who lived his life to the best of his ability as God gave him the power to do so. No better epitaph could be offered.

All of us will remember the voice. But, Arkansas is mourning the loss of the man, more than the voice. Mr. Eells came into our homes, our cars, our hearts, our minds...and our Razorback souls and infected us with his joyous spirit, stimulating our imaginations and our passion. Paul Eells was always the consumate gentleman...making everyone feel better about themselves. He was a man who clearly exemplified all that Jesus taught us by being a servant to everyone who crossed his path. Paul...Arkansas loved you with it's Razorback soul. Our Razorback hearts are broken, because you are no longer with us -- not because you (now) sit at the feet of your loving Saviour, but because you are no longer here to make us all feel better about ourselves. God Bless, Paul Irving Eells! Thank God for bringing him into all of our lives!!! HoopHog

I was lucky enough to finally met Mr.Eells in March at the womens SEC tournament at Alltel Arena. He shook my hand & signed my program..he took the time from his busy day to make me feel important..to make me feel like he had known me all my life. His smile was genuine and real, I called my parents that night not to tell them about the games that I had seen but about the best part of the tournament..meeting Mr. Paul Eells. He will forever be missed.

Vickie, our family went to church with you and Paul at New Life Church in Maumelle for about a year, back in 2003/2004. We had the pleasure of hearing Paul's testimony and saw the deep love he felt for Jesus, you, and his entire family. As avid Razorback fans, we will miss hearing that energetic and exciting voice calling the plays in the fall just like the rest of Arkansas, but we know you will miss him so much more. Know that every time a Hog game is played our family will be missing him with you and saying a prayer that God will give you and your entire family the peace that passes all understanding and comfort that only He can give. To us Paul was "The Voice of the Razorbacks", but we know to you he was your whole life. God Bless You in this time of sorrow. Our hearts and prayers are truly with you all!

Growing up in Eastern Arkansas there were two things to be sure of: The Sun rising from the East and Paul Eells making the call for the Hogs. It saddens my heart as we all invited Paul into our homes every Saturday to listen to the play-by-play. And in the new wave of technology being a transplanted Arkansasan in the military, I've had the pleasrure of hearing Paul make the call from Kuwait to Korea and I say this sincerly when I say that we truly had an angel on earth. We've all lost a member of our family, may God bless Mr. Eells family.

My heart truly goes out to you and your family and friends. I had the honor or meeting your beloved Paul at a football game in Fayetteville. I had a badly injured ankle and was unable to make the walk back to the car after the game. Stadium medics had me in a wheelchair awaiting traffic to clear so stadium officials could drive me to our car. Mr. Eells emerged from the press booth to leave and spoke to me. There is not a star in Hollywood that would have made me more giddy. We chatted briefly and he went and got me a coke for my wait as I was alone there and feeling a bit forgotten. It was an odd experience to meet him because it is so rare and precious to meet a person and actually feel the love and goodness they exude. I am in my mid forties and lost my husband 15 months ago so I do understand your pain. One of the things that brings the biggest smile to my face is knowing that my husband made someone else feel special even if only for a moment. Those moments can often be life altering. May the Peace that is our Savior Jesus be with you all. With respect and love, Jay Lynne Stuart

I want to express my deepest sympathies and condolences on the loss of Paul Eells to his family, friends, colleagues, and coworkers at KATV. I never knew Paul Eells personally. I came within about ten feet of him one time at one of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame banquets. I wish now that I could have gotten out of my seat to say a word or two to him. I don't think my band director would have allowed that though. Since we were playing our instruments at the banquet that one time and I didn't know when we were going to play another song. I so wanted to meet him one day here on this earth but I will have to wait till I see him in heaven. I have been an avid Razorback sports fan since the early 90s. Since I was a child I watched Paul call football and basketball games on television. When I couldn't see the football or basketball games on television I would listen to Paul call the games on the radio. Paul was my eyes and ears. I could always count on him to keep me updated on what was going on. I'll never forget his famous words "Touch Down Arkansas. Oh my!" Arkansas has truly lost a great man. I also have recently found out from things that I have read online that he was truly a man of God as well. I guess God finally decided that he needed Paul more than we did. And from what I have read I also realize that the Burton family lost a great person as well. They are also in my prayers! I want to say many Thank Yous to Paul Eells' family for sharing Paul with the state of Arkansas all these years. He has touched me and many other Arkansans in so many different ways. God Bless!
