of Little Rock, AR
August 26, 1930 - February 21, 2019
Shirley Rey Pomeroy Herndon, 88, of Little Rock died on February 21st at Baptist Health Medical Center. Born August 26, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Leslie Klett (L.K.) Pomeroy and Fay Roberts Pomeroy of Monticello. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Rebecca Herndon, and a surrogate mother and grandmother to many others. A career educator, her life was spent in both the accumulation and dissemination of knowledge. She earned two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Chemistry and one in Mathematics from Lawrence University in Wisconsin as well as a Masters in Chemistry. Early in her career, she taught high school in Louisiana and South Dakota before finally settling once again in her home state of Arkansas where she taught chemistry and math at Central High School, Mount St. Mary's and J.A. Fair before retiring in 1988. She was a voracious reader as well as the family archivist and historian. She was also the glue who held the family together by making sure that no matter how far and away the family members scattered, they would, at least through her, always stay in touch. Always up for the next great adventure, and having gained a passion for traveling from her father, in her life she had visited every continent, less one. Shirley was preceded in death by her brother, Ed Pomeroy and his wife, Barbara Pomeroy. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Herndon of Little Rock, a grandson, Greyson Elmore of Little Rock, a sister, Barbara Pomeroy Scidmore of Madison Wisconsin, a brother Leslie K. Pomeroy Jr., 9 nieces and nephews, and 12 great nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 24, 2019, at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, AR. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heifer International: www.heifer.org.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. Mrs. Herndon taught me Trig/Calculus at Mount St. Mary in the early 80's. She helped instill in me a love for mathematics and I will always remember her smiling face.
I send my deepest sympathy in your loss of Shirley. I knew her from when I worked at Cracker Barrel. She was always so kind to me. I enjoyed our conversations.
I'm sorry that Shirley has died. I respected and loved her and she was a great Tai Chi leader.
Sincerely, Nell Ambrose

My wife and I met Shirley more than 20 years ago when we were part of a group trying to bring city water to a large area west of Little Rock. We shared years of trials and tribulations in our efforts which were ultimately successful. As a result of Shirley's efforts, we were successful in bringing city water to an area of about 1,500 acres. Many of the property owners had well water that wasn't safe to drink without it being treated first. That's a good example of the kind of person Shirley was. Her life was one of helping improve the lives of so many others.
Once the water district was formed she served as a commissioner for almost 18 years until just recently. Her many skills as a teacher and archivist led her to volunteer to be the district's volunteer and very capable treasurer almost all those years.
Shirley was more than a colleague, she was a good friend.
Shirley, we will miss your always good cheer and smiling face. Rest in peace.
I taught with Shirley at Little Rick Central. I have so many fond memories of her and how proud she was of you, Becky
