Ann Warren, born in Newton County on May 10, 1935 to Fred and Opal Sims, was the middle child to two brothers, Dean and Gerald. Ann's first husband, Dennis Johnson was taken home early due to cancer. Later in life, she married Van Warren and they were married 19 years before he also went to his eternal home in heaven. Ann was raised on Compton Mountain and grew up attending Hilltop Church of Christ. Later, she became a member of Northside Church of Christ where she attended regular Sunday services and was an active part of the Golden Years Bible Study for many years. There were many times the bible study group would request her cherry cobbler or homemade pies at their potlucks. She also was an excellent caregiver to her mother for many years, living with her and caring for her while she battled cancer. During her last year of life, Ann lived at Maple Esplanade where she made many new friends and loved the days when volunteers would come to sing for them. She would often request a Merle Haggard song so she could quickly tell them that he was her third cousin. She loved gospel and country music and all kinds of animals, but especially taking care of stray cats, going on walks, out to lunch with friends and baking.
Ann began her career as a waitress after moving to St. John Washington with her husband, Dennis Johnson. She worked for two restaurants there. The first was Carl's Cafe and after it closed, she waited tables at Wheel Inn Cafe for 10 years before moving back to Harrison. She then began to work at the Rocket Drive-In under the ownership of John Marrs where she worked for many years. However, most people knew her as the waitress from Ranch House, where she was employed under three different owners for over 30 years. Daily, she waited on family, friends and strangers, treating each person with the same care and attention, where she quickly gained a reputation for being an excellent waitress with repeat customers asking to sit in her area.
Ann is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Opal Sims and husbands, Dennis Johnson and Van Warren; Brothers, Dean Sims (Bertie) and Gerald Sims.
Ann is survived by one sister-in-law, Norma Sims; One niece, Rhonda Eubanks (Bobby); one nephew, Steve Sims (Angela); six great-nephews; one great-niece and two great-great nieces.
