of Conway, AR
August 25, 1931 - June 30, 2024
Pine Bluff native Henry Eugene Hendrix (Gene) went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2024 just shy of his ninety-third birthday. He was a graduate of Arkansas A & M where he met his beautiful wife Carol Ann.
His career as an architect encompassed designing homes, businesses, medical clinics, hospitals, and churches in Arkansas and various other states. He ended his career as a partner in the Fort Smith architectural firm of Laser, Guest, Hendrix and Reddick.
After retiring in 1996 he and Carol moved to Conway to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as a devoted husband and man of faith. His faith in Jesus was central to his life. He was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff and served as a deacon at First Baptist in Fort Smith and Woodland Heights Baptist in Conway. He demonstrated daily what it meant to walk with the Lord.
Gene Hendrix loved people. He loved to make them feel valued, and he really loved to make them laugh. He held several patents for various practical and amazing inventions. He enjoyed teaching high school boys' Sunday school. He spent many Saturdays outside all day creating an immaculate yard. His biggest passion, however, was music. He had a magnificent bass voice. He was a founding member of the Fort Smith Chorale with his friend Bill Cromer which performed in Carnegie Hall in New York. He attended church choir rehearsal every Wednesday night, singing every Sunday morning and night for many years. He did solo work in weddings, funerals, cantatas, oratorios, and church services. He loved the opera, symphony, piano concerts, and all classical music.
Whether you called him Gene, Papa, Papa Gene, Uncle Gene, Henry, Eugene or dad, you would be hard pressed to find a finer man anywhere.
Henry Eugene Hendrix was preceded in death by his parents, Flossie and Robert Hendrix, three brothers Jack, Richard and Arthur Hendrix, two sisters, Bobby Hendrix Maples (Venoy), and Jane Hendrix Dean (Kenneth), and his beloved wife of sixty-six years Carol Ann (Carter) Hendrix.
He is survived by his sister-in-law Lucille Hendrix, three daughters, Gena Hendrix Carter (Mike), Julie Hendrix Dodge (Ben), Jenifer Hendrix, five grandchildren, Leslie Carter Lloyd (Chris) and their children Madison and Carter; Stephen Carter (Melissa) and their children Elsa, Gemma and Leo; Kevin Carter (Samantha) and their children June, Henry and Espie; Kate Dodge Perry (Brandon) and their children Jaden, Ellie, and Lily; Drew Dodge and many other beloved family members.
Visitation will begin at 10:00am, Monday July 8, 2024 at Woodland Heights Baptist Church, 4215 Prince Street, Conway, AR 72034 with a celebration of life service at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Haven, 1923 Batesville Mountain Road, Damascus AR 72039.
All of us here at Studio 6 Architects (formerly Laser, Guest, Hendrix, and Reddick) send our thoughts and prayers for Gene and all of his family. All of us here worked with Gene and enjoyed every minute of it. He was such a joy to be around. The stories he could tell! A fine man, he will be missed.
Jenifer,
We were so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. We loved to visit with your sweet daddy when he was at the store, usually telling funny stories. He was a perfect and amazing example of how to live a Godly life. He was a wonderful husband to your precious mom and such a loving and fabulous daddy to you girls! I know he will be so missed by your family but I also know for certain the stories about him will live on to bless and encourage many others. Love and prayers for you and all of your family in the days ahead.
So sad to hear of Gene's passing. What a wonderful person. Many good memories in Ft. Smith. My deepest sympathies to Gena, Julie and Jenifer. Love you three...
Thoughts and prayers for all the family. Mr. Hendrix was a wonderful family man! He was a talented architect, kind, and told the best jokes. Most importantly, he was a Christian who practiced his faith. Praying sweet memories will bring you comfort until you see him again He made me smile!
Gena, Julie, Jenifer, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your families this day and in the days to come. May you know the peace and comfort that comes only from our Lord.
Gena, Julie, Jenifer and Families—what a privilege to have known your dad. Gene had such a keen mind, an incredible sense of humor, a beautiful bass voice, a servant’s heart with a willingness to help anyone and a genuine love of people. His love of Carol, you girls and your families was evident to all who knew him. Most of all, he loved and shared Jesus. We’ve heard his beautiful rendition of ‘Old Man River’ many times, but we especially loved to hear him sing ‘Eternal Life’. Now he is rejoicing in the presence of his Lord and Savior for eternity. May God bless you as you celebrate his life.

Max Henry used to cut Mr Gene's hair. We loved him. He was a joy to know. His duty, he felt, was to leave us smiling .
A pleasure to know and a character to remember
Also he had the most beautiful hand writing
Kevin I’m so sorry for the loss of your Papa sending prayers and hugs to you and your family
Jo and I didn’t know Gene until we became one of his neighbors after moving to Conway a few years ago. We walk every day by his house and would see him sitting in his chair in the garage, watching the traffic go by. (if you know Gene, you know that it’s against his law to just walk by and not stop and talk a minute.) I was amazed after our first stop to talk to him how quick witted and wise he was. From that first time of stopping to visit with him, we looked forward to our daily visits. We could learn something new with each visit.
Gene became a great friend by just being Gene. We loved him. He will be missed.

Mr. Hendricks lived a long, productive life and was always a friend to my family for years and years. I have memories of him occasionally coming to PBHS choir practice, singing at my wedding and my dad’s funeral. What a life well-lived! God bless you girls and your families.
Mr. Gene will always remain in my mind as my “Granddaddy” from the FBC Christmas play 45 years ago. What a wonderful, joyful, godly man. Praise the Lord for his legacy of faithfulness, and for comfort for the whole family.
A finer man I never met! He loved to tease me and always, always made me laugh and tease right back. You girls and your families were so blessed to have him as a dad. You will always hold sweet, sweet memories as will I.
I have been missing Gene since his retirement. It was always an adventure to travel with Mr. Gene. I loved him and will miss his phone calls. He was a winner in life. No one enjoyed life more than Mr. Gene.
