Gerald ''Spud'' Albert Richmond, 94, of Mountain View, Arkansas passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024 at the Bloosoms in Mountain View, Arkansas. He was born on December 15, 1929 to the late Clayton and Ethel (Waner) Richmond in Hillsboro, Kansas.
It was love at first sight for Spud Richmond and Lela Stubbs. The two were introduced while on a double date with Spud's best friend and Lela's sister. Spud and Lela were married in 1954, after a two week courtship. ''It was wonderful love,'' Spud said with a wistful, far-away look in his eyes as he sat reminiscing about the woman he adored for 55 years. Spud had a quick smile and laughs easily as he talked about his life with Lela. The only two times they were ever away from each other were when she was in the hospital and that time in 1954 when Spud went to the Indianapolis 500. Spud always said the key to a long and happy marriage is compatibility and love that has a spark.

Lela lost her battle with heart disease. She passed away on April 22, 2008 after a long struggle. Throughout Lela's illness, Spud grew to trust the healthcare professionals and physicians at Stone County Medical Center, and he was grateful for their sincere concern and thoughtfulness during the days before she passed away.

Spud worked in the aircraft manufacturing industry making B29s and B52s for Boeing. As a member of the Naval Reserve Spud served his country during the Korean War. Upon returning from the war, Spud says his outlook on life had changed and he decided he wanted something different. The Richmond's purchased a farm in Mountain View, and in 1965 they moved there from Kansas to raise cattle and chickens. In 1974 the Richmond's sold the farm and purchased a modest home within the city limits of Mountain View.
Spud remembers the day he and Lela decided to give their home to the Stone County Medical Center. As the couple relaxed in their favorite recliners, Lela said, ''Honey, let's give the house to the hospital.'' Without missing a beat, Spud said, ''That suits me.''

Spud is survived by many extended family and friends.

Spud is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Lela Stubbs Richmond; sisters, Cladine Hartke and Wilma Pigorsch; one brother, Gordon Richmond; a host of nieces and nephews along with many friends; one true special friend, Mary Moore whom he loved very much, and his two dachshunds, Abby and Sandy.

A private service will take place at a later date.

Roller Crouch Funeral Home in Mountain View, Arkansas is in charge of the arrangements.

Spud has been a good friend and neighbor of mine since 1966. It was always a great pleasure to be around him.
