of North Little Rock, AR
May 9, 1942 - March 28, 2024
One Friday in 1960, Avay Gray graduated high school. Three days later she started her first day as a telephone operator, beginning a 30 year career with AT&T/Southwestern Bell. That year she met John Jaynes who in 1961 would change her last name and her life with three children and two step children and with whom she would spend over 50 years building a great career and a wonderfully happy life.
She loved to laugh, loved to work and loved her family who now hope that they provided for her in the end at least half as well as she provided for them in the beginning, as she succumbed to the effects of multiple myeloma after 11 years.
Her scions are Karen Horton (Tom), Ron Jaynes (Diane), Shannon Cook (Jim), Brian Jaynes & Johnna Feldman (Tracy) and grandchildren, Heidi, Adam, Brandon, Jason, Sarah, Katie, Liz, Arianna, Gabriel, Evan, Lucas, Harper and Everette. Great grandchildren, Tyler, Annabelle, Lucille, Jasper, Harrison, Aeron, Zach, Elliot, Trenton, Maya, Lucea.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at 10:00 AM, at Roller-Owens Funeral Home in North Little Rock. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd from 6:00-8:00 PM, at Roller-Owens Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow the funeral at Rest Hills Memorial Park in North Little Rock.
I was saddened to learn of Avay Jaynes' death. She was the very best supervisor I worked with at Southwestern Bell in the 1960's & 1970's. She was an unforgettable beautiful person of the very best character. Praying for her family's comfort in their hours of grief. Write down the things you remember about her now before the memories fade.
Please accept our sympathy for the loss of Velda Avay Gray Jaynes. She was my cousin from my father's side of the family. I just heard about her passing away. I will not be able to attend the services tomorrow. Just wanted to let her family know that we will be thinking about them during this difficult time.
Sincerely - Patsy Lassiter Manley and husband Naston Manley, daughters Sandra Manley Harris and Susan Manley Bruce.
BJ, we are so sorry to hear of your family's loss. We are thinking of you and wishing you all peace at this difficult time.
Loved your Mom - she was a sweet strong lady
My stepmother, Avay taught me everything I needed to know. From good manners, cooking, cleaning, taking care of babies to the importance of having a relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. She was only 19 when she married my father. Finding yourself suddenly responsible for two children could not have been easy. She did the best she could and I am grateful to her for many reasons. She fought the good fight with this ravaging illness and now she is at peace with our Lord. My heart aches for my siblings and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is sorely missed.
