Emma Jean Frederick Hughes

On March 18th, Jean Hughes of Little Rock, loving wife and devoted mother, passed away at the age of 94.

Born March 13, 1930 in Heber Springs, AR, she was the daughter of Tom and Christine Frederick.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her sons, Fred (Cindy), Howard (Lynn), Bruce (Gerrie) and daughter, Patricia Ratley. Brothers, Frank and Tom Frederick and sister, Pauline Crossland. She has eight grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years; her son, Philip; son-in-law, David Ratley and brother, J.W. Frederick.

Raising her five children and taking care of her husband is what she considered one of her biggest accomplishments.

Mrs. Hughes was a stay-at-home mom for the most part, but she also had some interesting jobs along the way. Her first job after marriage was in a greasy spoon beer joint (her words). She was let go after two days because she had told a story and said she had experience and she was unable to achieve a head on the beer. Her only regret, she was unable to quit, because she had found another job, before she was fired.

Mrs. Hughes also worked in Montgomery Ward's candy department and one year she had a fireworks stand.

In the early 70's, Mrs. Hughes acquired a job at the Little Rock Police Department and had the distinction of being the first woman to work in the jail. She really loved this job.

After retirement she enjoyed camping, fishing and gardening.

Momma did it her way!

You will be missed but never forgotten. We used to have some interesting conversations, some were funny. I'll miss those a lot. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
