February 20, 1928 - January 31, 2024

Captain G.A. ''Bud'' Hines, Jr. USN went to the Lord on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. He was born February 20, 1928 in Rutherfordton, NC to Bonnie and Gulmer Hines. Bud was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Sue Hines. He was also proceeded in death by his sisters, Katherine Williams, Margaret Dorsey, Louise Kane, Mary Geer Booth and Geraldine Poltrone.

Bud attended Duke University at the age of 16, for two years. During that time he decided he wanted to be a Naval officer and pursued an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1951. It was during June Week at the Academy, 1951, he met the love of his life, Sue Crafton, at the Admiral's Garden party. They married the following March.

Bud was a submariner and could tell wonderful, fantastic stories of life under the sea. He was the commissioning commanding officer of the USS Guardfish, a fast attack submarine, during the Cold War in the 1960's. It was then he earned the Legion of Merit. He was Commandant of the Submarine Squadron at Mare Island, CA for over two years and finished his 24 years of active duty as Executive Aide to the Commander In Chief US Naval Forces Europe in London, UK.

Bud retired from the US Navy in July, 1975 and joined Stone & Webster Engineering Corp in Boston, MA as a project manager. He was assigned as Manager of Projects at Stone & Webster International Engineering Ltd, returning to London, a city he and Sue loved, for an 18 month to 3 year assignment. He was promoted to Managing Director after four years and he and Sue remained in the London UK area for 13 years until his retirement.

Bud and Sue moved to Conway after retirement to be close to their children and grandchildren. Bud was active in the community as a member of the Planning Commission and First United Methodist Church in Conway. Bud was an Eagle Scout and Master Gardener.

Bud is survived by his daughter, Libba Tierney and son, Trey and Kate Hines; grandchildren, Beth Tierney, Scott and Ashton Tierney, Alex Hines and Angelina Hines, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. Bud is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to thank Donna Ponchard, Janet and Wayne Gregory, Mike Norman, Fonda Stone, Vickie and Mark Ardagna, Danielle Combs, Naomi Wyllia and David Cariker for all they have done for both Bud and Sue over the years.

The service to celebrate Bud's life will be at 3 pm Saturday, February 10, 2024 at First United Methodist Church, Conway. Reverends Nathan Kilbourne and Deidre Roberts will officiate.

Sue was my beloved big sister, “other mother” and refuge all my life. Still, I miss her terribly. I was seven years old when she and Bud married and I always felt that their home was mine too. Bud was always a great source of advice……solicited or not….and I valued that as wise as he was, he seemed to respect my opinion too. With them both gone there is a big gaping hole in my heart and I will continue to grieve until we are reunited. In the meantime I will remember all the wonderful times and memories we shared. Love you so much Bud and Sue.

Captain Hines was my Commanding Officer on USS Guardfish (SSN-612) starting in 1967. He was a great CO.
Bud attended our big reunion where he was recognized as a man of honor and integrity.
He will be remembered…

I moved my family to Conway in 1994 and had the privilege of having Bud and Sue as neighbors across the street in Pippinpost for a period of time. They were always so loving and gracious. But most of all I was most honored to serve them as their family doctor for many years. They loved each other and my family loved them. May God bless them in eternity together.

Dear family and friends of Bud,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Bud´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Torsk SS-423, USS Bream SS-243, USS Sam Houston SSBN-609, as Executive Officer of USS George Washington SSBN-598 and as Commanding Officer of USS Guardfish SSN-612.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

Our neighborhood Pippinpost will certainly never be the same without Sue and now Bud. They were such dear friends and great neighbors for so many years. It’s hard to let go but knowing they are together again and free of pain is such a wonderful thought. So much love extended to the family., Libba and Trey. What an honor to have known them.
