of Little Rock, AR
May 23, 1940 - January 10, 2024
Kay Gunter didn't have FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) because she wouldn't dream of missing out. If there wasn't a good party to go to, she threw one. And if you didn't have a place to watch the big game or spend the holidays, she insisted you come to her house.
Amelda Kay Gunter was born May 23, 1940 in Chattanooga, TN. She died in the early hours of January 10, 2024 at Arkansas Hospice at CHI St. Vincent in Little Rock. Kay loved her family, her friends, the Arkansas Razorbacks and those sweet Manning boys (Peyton and Eli). Please don't ask us to list these in order of her affection. Some feelings might get hurt.
Kay Gunter was a devoted parent, patron and later an employee in the Little Rock School District. She served as principal's secretary at Hall High School under Principals Barnhouse, Bradford and Anderson. She finished her career as Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education. The annual, unofficial LRSD Christmas party Kay hosted at her house for nearly twenty years was the stuff of legend.
In retirement, Kay never missed an opportunity to hop on a plane to Florida for a visit with her son or jump in a car with friends for a road trip to see the Razorbacks play. She loved attending the Little Rock Touchdown Club during football season.
But her children and particularly her one and only grandchild, Sam, were the source of her deepest joy. She took great pride in their accomplishments, willed them through their struggles and delighted in their presence.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Amelda and Ivan Waller and her husband, Sam Gunter (2003). She is survived by her children, Steve Gunter (Debbie), Orlando, FL; Tracy Jackson (Tim) Little Rock; grandson, Samuel Gunter Jackson, New York, NY and the Golden Girls as well as other friends too numerous to mention here.
Kay will be remembered and celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 13th at Little Rock's Second Presbyterian Church. A visitation for family and guests will follow the service. Kay's family is most appreciative of the kindness and support of the Second Presbyterian family and Don Cooper of Roller Funeral Homes.
Today's service was beautiful. And the words were astounding. I cried so many happy tears for my Kay. All I can say is that we can hope for the baseball team cause that is all we have left and gymnastics is competing (that is for Tim). I am so thankful for the time I got to be around her. And my prayers are for her family but also her Golden Girls Carolyn and Gayle.
Kay was my idol. I want to be her. Her house was my favorite sports bar and her knowledge was like google. All I can say now is that I am forever grateful that I got to know her and be with her. She was amazing.
My sincere condolences on your loss. I will always remember her love for tennis and all the good times we had on Ridge Pass Court. May she rest in peace. Sincerely, Sol..
All of our deepest sympathies at this difficult time. We will remember Kay’s indulgence of dogs every time we put a dollop of cottage cheese on our furbaby’s kibble. You are all so deeply loved.
When Kay Gunter was at LR Hall as the principal's secretary, I was a teacher/coach then became an assistant principal. We believed in her goodness and love for us, and enjoyed all of the benefits of her work, in keeping a great educational environment. Also, it was fun playing in the annual faculty vs students basketball with her and attending her Christmas parties. May Kay Gunter dwell in the house of the Lord forever!!
Dear Tracy, Steve and Families,
I am sorry for the loss of your mother. She loved many people but most of all she loved her family and took great pride in your many accomplishments.
She was not only my professional right hand, but also a good and thoughtful friend. She took good care of me professionally but also was there for me personally when needed.
I have many good memories; I am thankful to have known her.
Peace and love to you,
Frances
There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone the light remains.
Kay was one of those special people and her light will continue in those who loved her. She was a real dame in the best sense of the word and I will miss her! WPS ??
Kay was a wonderful secretary at Hall High whom I worked with for many years. Great sense of humor and good friend. Everyone knew who really ran the school building with her extensive knowledge of students, teachers and parents. She was the best kept secret in LRSD for many years. Condolences to Tracy and Tim and family. You had an exceptional Mother, who we loved knowing. Rest well Kay.
Steve,
So sorry about your loss. I still remember all the good times we enjoyed with Kay and Sam.
