In celebration of a life well lived, Steve Gutting, 80, of Harrison, Arkansas finished his battle with Alzheimer's on October 5th, 2023 at Hillcrest Home, in Harrison. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary Gutting of Beldenville, Wisconsin, and his brother Frank Gutting of Forest Lake, Minnesota. He leaves behind his beloved wife Rachel who shared his life for 49 years, his children and their spouses: Leslie and Quentin Palos of Jerseyville, Illinois and Aaron and Jessica Gutting of Harrison; grandchildren: Sierra, Sydney and Savana Palos and Ian Gutting; his sister, Sister Therese Gutting of Portland, Oregon and brother and sister-in-law Joe and Marla Gutting of Hager City, Wisconsin.
Steve was born in Kilkenny, Minnesota, and grew up in Beldenville, Wisconsin. He attended St Francis Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Ellsworth High School. In high school, he participated in track, football, and wrestling helping take his team state in wrestling. After high school, he attended a year at the University of Wisconsin River Falls in economics. He transferred to Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis where he graduated with a degree in drafting and estimating. Later he attended a two-year program at California Institute of Technology for contract law and administration.
Steve started working at an early age on the land for various farmers and later working as a farm hand for the Huppert family. He bailed hay and attended to their cows. He started his professional career with Acton Construction specializing in estimation and supervision of the construction of wastewater treatment plants across the United States. This is how he met his future wife, Rachel while he was working on the Jackson, Mississippi construction site. When this job was completed, Steve took his new bride to Minnesota. He then worked with MacArthur Company in their industrial insulation division.
The family settled in Prescott, Wisconsin and raised their children. As a dad, he took time to enjoy his family always helping with homework or their 4H projects.
Steve's motto for life could be a quote from Vince Lombardi "Your God, your family, and the Green Bay Packers". Besides the Packers, Steve loved beekeeping, carpentry, hunting, fishing, gardening, and reading the history of the greats of America.
Steve was very active at St. Joseph Catholic Church, helping to supervise the addition to St. Joseph School, serving on the financial committee, and the school board. He also actively served in the Diocese. He loved the people of Pierce County and each one of the people he worked for taught him lessons that made him the man he became.
He retired from construction and moved to Arkansas to once again serve his church by joining the Knight's of Columbus.
Steve will be remembered at a visitation 5-7:00 pm Friday, October 20th at Roller Funeral Home in Mountain Home. Memorial Mass will be 10:00am Saturday, October 21 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Legacy Hospice of Harrison or Baxter Day Service Center in Mountain Home. Both of these organizations treated Steve with respect and kindness during his illness.
