Flora Ann (Elms) Carey was born November 10, 1938 in Locust Grove, Arkansas to James and Mildred Elms. She passed from this life to her Heavenly home on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
She graduated from Desha High School in 1956 and went on to pursue her Nursing degree from St. Vincent's School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1959. She then married the love of her life, Robert Carey. They spent 50+ years together until his death in December 2017.
Her nursing career spanned over 45+ years. She began her nursing career at St. Vincent's then moved back to her hometown where she worked at North Arkansas Clinic until its closure. She then moved to White River Medical Center where she was one of the first employees. She believed in old school nursing and believed in spending time with and taking care of her patients. She became friends with many patients to which some were still in contact with her until her death. She always enjoyed telling nursing stories with her friends and family. Her family has always been told what a mentor she was to so many new nurses throughout her career.
She was a past member of the White River Kiwanis where she served as secretary for 14 years. She was the only member to receive the John Hixson Award. She was a member of the Allen Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. She was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching all types of sports, but nothing compared to her Arkansas Razorbacks.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sister, Doris House; brother, Granville Elms and an infant brother, Jimmy Elms.
She is survived by her son, Mark Carey (Sandy) of Jonesboro; two daughters, Kathy Carey of the home and Kim White (Jimmy Smith) of Cave City. She is also survived by her brother and only living sibling, Mac Elms (Carolyn) of Pine Bluff. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, Michael Carey (Sheree), Dylan Carey (Raven), Melody Manuel (Cody), Austin Carey (Cobhye), Andrew Carey, Crystal Dings, Monty White III, Amanda Mashburn (Eric), Gerald White, Olivia White, Leland White, Deborah Hames (Jenny) and John Anderson; fifteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
We would like to extend a gratitude of thanks to all the nurses and staff with Legacy Hospice and Wood-Lawn Heights. You took exceptional care of Mom during her sickness.

Your Mother was sooo kind to me in the delivery room. I had an almost 12 pound baby with no meds. She let me grip her arm. The next day she came in to see me and her arm was bruised. I felt so bad...she hugged me and said that was part of her job. That was 51 years ago, but I have never forgotten. She was a Special person.
Flora was a long time friend and was my nurse when I lived there. So glad I got to know her personally and remains friends. She is at peace and is a comfort to know. Love and prayers to the family
