Charles Eugene Tadlock

of Benton, AR

August 2, 1939 - August 14, 2023

Charles Eugene Tadlock, 84, of Benton passed away on August 14, 2023. He was born August 2, 1939 to the late Jessie Mae "Tot" Turner Tadlock of Warren. He is survived by his wife, Alexis Reid Tadlock of Benton; his son, Charles Craig Tadlock (Phyllis Romero) of Plano, Texas; his daughter, Cymber Leigh Tadlock of Pine Bluff and two grandchildren, Katie Elizabeth Tadlock and Andrew Charles Tadlock. He is also survived by his brother, Larry Tadlock of Sherwood. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 56 years, Kathleen Marie Snell Tadlock of Sheridan and Charles and Alexis's daughter, Spivey Kathleen Tadlock. He was a thoughtful leader, a humble servant to those in his community and a loving spouse, father and grandfather.

Charles graduated from Warren High School in 1957 and from Hendrix College in 1961. He was proud to have played on the last Hendrix football team before it suspended play for 50 years. There, he served as captain, earned all-conference honors and was selected to the Little All-American team. He was inducted into the Hendrix Sports Hall of Honor and has continued to be a dedicated supporter of Hendrix throughout his lifetime, including serving on the Alumni Board of Governors and the board of the Warrior Booster Club. He also earned a Masters degree from the University of Arkansas in 1968. He began his professional career as a teacher and head football and track coach at Charleston, where he coached multiple state championship cross country teams, won district coach of the year honors 7 times and was selected to coach in the state All-Star Football Game.

Charles moved to Sheridan in 1981 and spent the last half of his life as a beloved pillar of the community. He was assistant principal and then principal of Sheridan Junior High/Middle School until his retirement in 2007, then continued his support of Sheridan schools as a member of the School Board for several years thereafter. He was an active member and leader at First United Methodist Church of Sheridan. His community service included being a member of the Grant County Election Commission, serving on the Legislative Committee of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association, serving as President of the Grant County Retired Teachers Association and being a member of the Democratic Party State Committee.

Charles loved track & field and he was the meet referee for approximately 100 state championship meets in track & field and cross country. For his accomplishments as a meet referee and coach, as well as his individual accomplishments in the sport, he was inducted into the Arkansas Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2005. He also served on the Hall of Fame board for many years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Sheridan, P.O Box 357, Sheridan, AR 72150.

Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Roller-Owens Funeral Home, 5509 JFK Blvd. North Little Rock, AR. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 17 at First United Methodist Church, 100 East Church Street, Sheridan, AR.

Tadlock Family,

I love your Dad, he is and was one of the finest men Ive known. He was a great Coach, Teacher, Principle to not only myself but my wife, and children. He was a great encourager and example for me as a young man and later in life as a grown man and father. I wish I could express how much an impact Coach Tadlock had on my life. Had the privilege and pleasure of attending Hendrix with Charles. Even tho he was a class ahead of me, I considered Charles a friend. We were not close but as I remember in intramural football. He was always gracious to pick me up off the ground. I wasn't a very big fellow, But he always had something positive to say to me. Most pleasant to be around and so impressed with what he accomplished with his career and family. Treasure his memories.. He will be missed by many, Sincerely, Tom Reeves

Charles was a kind and soft spoken man. As a track coach, I attended many of the state championships that he officiated. He always took the time to engage in pleasant conversation and never failed to ask how I was doing. I will miss him greatly. Prayers to the Tadlock Family.

I'll always think of him as Coach Tadlock. He was my first football coach and track coach, at Charleston, Arkansas. I had great respect for him, but also genuinely liked him. His concern for his players was real.

Craig and Cymber: your dad and mother were a big part of my life growing up. Your dad hauled us cheerleaders to Dallas every summer for cheerleading camp! He was also my MYF leader all through high school. Your parents were so much a part of Charleston. I am so glad I got to see Coach at the CHS Alumni reception this summer. I even have a picture of us, that now I will always treasure. Love to both of you 🖤💛

I was fortunate to have Coach Tadlock as my track and football coach for all 6 years of jr and high school at Charleston. There is a handful of men who were mentors, role models and big influences in my life. Coach certainly was. There was even a period of time that I wanted to be just like him, a teacher and coach with his class act personality. He always set the example for “his” athletes he coached.
