August 10, 1926 - April 24, 2022

Samuel Henry Younger, 95, of St. James, passed away on April 24, 2022. Sam Younger was born in Mayes County, Oklahoma on August 10, 1926 to William Stanley & Cora Dell Greenway Younger. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Francis Younger, his son Kenny Dale Younger, his daughter Cora Sue Younger Wade, and his siblings William Boyce ''Bud'' Younger, Elsie Edith Younger Davis, Pauline I. Younger Reeves, Sonja Marvene Younger Manning, and Julia Melvene Younger Williams. He is survived by his only grandchild, Susan ''Wade'' Younger, and many nephews and nieces.

Sam Younger grew up in Stone County, Arkansas and was a living library about historical events in Mountain View and the rich ancestry of his relatives. At the age of nine, Sam picked up the fiddle and taught himself to play by ear. For those who wouldn't know, Sam Younger was one of the last of the Ozark dance-fiddlers, and he has played for many thousands of square dances, waltzes, jiggin's, etc. He was a recipient of the Joseph Mulkey Kent fiddle award, and his own legacy will live on through the tunes he played and stories he told. He served his country with honor in the US Army, and he was a Veteran of World War II. Sam was a member of the Methodist Church. He always enjoyed sitting on the porch, visiting with company and telling stories.

While flowers are welcome, please consider donating to the Music Roots program, whose goal is to expose students to folk music so special to this region and to encourage students to play traditional folk instruments. The Committee of One Hundred PO Box 2111 Mountain View, AR 72560

Or consider a tree tribute in honor of Sam Younger through Trees for a Change. When you give trees as remembrance gifts, a real tree will be planted in a U.S. National Forest in their honor.

Praying for you all as I know Sam's passing leaves a big whole. I remember Sam playing on the back porch at the OFC many years ago. His band was my first intro to Ozark mtn music and it was good!!
