James Wilson Mytton passed away at home in Broomfield, Colorado on April 2, 2025, at the age of 98. He was the son of James A. and Mary (Phillips) Mytton. Jim was preceded in death by his son, James Grammer Mytton age 48, a Downs Syndrome child in 2019, wife of over 50 years, Jeanne Thomas Mytton, age 84 in 2020, and brother William Mytton in 2024. He is survived by his sister-in-law Roseanne Mytton of St. Joseph, Missouri.
Jim was born February 18, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri. He spent his childhood in St. Joseph, Missouri where he graduated from Central High School in 1945. He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire in 1949 and received his master's degree in Geology from the University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming in 1951. He was employed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from 1951 until his retirement in 1986. Jim's career involved work in the domestic programs and projects overseas, notably Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Colombia, and Brazil. He met Jeanne Thomas in 1969, in Bogota, Colombia where she was secretary to the Charge d affaires, United States Information Service. They were married on December 28, 1969, in Searcy, Arkansas, Jeanne's birthplace, and began their life together in Belo Horizonte, Brazil where their son Jimmy was born in 1971. Jim and Jeanne became members of the Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC) in the Denver, Colorado metro area in support of Jimmy following their return to the United States in 1971.
Jim acquired a love for the Out-Of-Doors, especially the mountains, during his association with Cheley Colorado Camps, Estes Park, Colorado and Rocky Mountain National Park. That with his interest in science led to his becoming an Earth Scientist. His wife Jeanne shared his love for travel both in the United States and abroad. Jim came in time to share Jeanne's love of music and her devotion to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Jim's interest in color photography resulted in images of people and places throughout the world. Later in life he turned to oil painting while continuing his interest in photography.
Jim will be laid to rest in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Grammer Plot, Searcy, Arkansas next to Jeanne during services under the direction of the Roller-Daniel Funeral Home, Searcy.
