The first time the curtain closed on this fine chap was the day after Christmas of 1976. After a day or two of tense negotiation with an entity of an origin he never revealed, he was sent back to his mom in exchange for leaving a platter of bones under his pillow every night. An agreement he was careful to make good on each and every night, through sickness, health, good times and bad. Until one night he didn't. He loved life, maybe a little more than the rest of us know how to, considering the bargain he'd made.
A bit of a renaissance man, he played guitar, and bagpipes briefly, made violins, was always creative in the kitchen, a writer of all things, and drawing. He had his head in the stars, dragging his titan of a telescope out to a good and dark place to share the wonders of our universe with anyone interested, no matter how dang cold it was. He was also deeply connected with nature and had a great love and respect for the earth. He was the go-to guy when you were in a rough spot, always there there if you needed someone's knees knocked or just an ear and a hug. This kind spirit endured even after illness set in: he was still the bringer of tea or cookies and was ready with a well timed joke and the was the absolute greatest, most petty gossip partner.
This magnificent spirit was hand crafted by parents Daniel and Laura to conspire against them alongside elder brother David to ensure a well receded hairline. Try as they did, their efforts were fruitless so they decided to add Michele to the mix, which did the thing. She grew up to make him an uncle for the first time, Laura, Amanda, and Tom who all shared in his wonderment of our living universe and spiritual beliefs. Fast forward a bit and he gained Kathy, the greatest step mother life could offer along with sisters Lisa: mother of Justin, Brandon, Melissa, and Dakoda, Tina: mother of Aaron, Mariah, and Ryan, and Tonyah: mother of Darrien and Athena. And more recently he had the surrealistic joy of discovering Phyllis, a sister previously unknown: keeper of Carl and mother of Tasha, Steven, and Jojo. He was the most dependable, occasionally trying, often wild brother and loved his brother and sisters dearly.
He loved being the only boy in the room so much that he decided to have three daughters and one son, an ineffective attempt to preserve that hairline. Jill: mother of Skylar and Lily, Tina: keeper of Jason and mother of Kamryn and Amilia, and David: bound by no human, are still earthbound and Vicky was waiting on the other side to give him the grand tour.
His antics, humor, kindness, and baked goods will be greatly missed. As we continue this mortal journey let us carry his legacy of humor, kindness, creativity, and his love of family. Love those closest to you and care for each other as he did.
I'll miss the hours of talking about art, writing and video games.
