John Thurman (Johnny) Tyler, Jr., 75, of Conway entered into the eternal presence of his Lord and Savior on September 19, 2024. After a long battle with Multiple Myeloma, he passed away at home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 3, 1949 in Conway, AR to John Thurman, Sr. and Emma Lou Starkey Tyler. While growing up in Conway he loved playing YBMA and American Legion Baseball.
Johnny graduated from Conway High School in 1967. While in high school, he was a member of the 1964 Wampus Cat Football State Championship Team. He was also the starting quarterback for the Wampus Cats from 1966-1967. He then attended the State College of Arkansas (now the University of Central Arkansas). He lettered in football and baseball for the Bears from 1968-1970. He, at one time, held the record for the longest interception return for the Bears. He always took pride in being one of Raymond's boys. While in college, he met and married his wife, Elizabeth Tackett Tyler on August 14, 1970 at First Baptist Church in Conway, where he was a lifelong member until he had recently joined Woodland Heights Baptist Church.
Johnny worked in the Conway Public School District for 33 years and retired after serving as the principal at Conway High School for 14 years. While principal, he was President of the 5A Principals' Association and served on the Arkansas Activities Association Board of Directors. He is also a retired Sgt. Major of the 122nd Army Reserve Command where he served as the President of the NCO Training Counsel for the 5th Army. After retirement, he loved spending time with his family, scuba diving or house boating on Lake Ouachita. He always looked forward to his yearly pilgrimage to St. Louis with his brother, Tom, to watch the Cardinals play. He attended Bible Study Fellowship where he was a class leader and enjoyed his men's fellowship group. He also took up golf and loved spending time on the course with his golf buddies every day. One of his favorite pastimes was drinking coffee and solving all of the world's problems and sometimes trying to create problems with his ''Nutter's Chapel Coffee Group''.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dr. Thomas P. Tyler and his favorite Welsh Terrier companion, Jett. He is survived by his wife, Liz; his children, John Thurman (Trey) Tyler, III (Patti) of Conway, Arkansas, Kristen M. Cannon (Matthew) of Simpsonville, South Carolina and Clinton M. Dear Liz, Trey, Kristen and Clint,
I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I know Johnny fought long and hard and is now at peace. I pray you find great comfort in your precious memories and know I’m thinking of you all.
“What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us” ~ Helen Keller
Clint, I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
I had the privilege of working for your Dad at the high school. Not only was he a great boss but also a dear friend. He always had that grin on his face especially when your mom was at his side. He handled his diagnosis with grace and determination! I was so sad when I heard he had passed.
He will be missed by many and heaven certainly gained an angel.
Love and prayers to your family.
In younger days Johnny and I played baseball together on the American Legion team. He was a good friend and competitor. In later years we were brothers in Bible Study. We became friends with he and Liz through mutually shared life experiences. He was always ready to listen and mentor. We will miss sharing a table with him at the Letterman's club festivities and rehashing the UCA football game. In all things Johnny proved he was a servant of his Lord and Savior and we were blessed to have spent time with him.
I was so sad to hear of Mr. Tyler’s passing. I loved hearing all the stories about growing up next door to him from my Mom. As I got older I got to know him and respect as my principal. He definitely left an impression on anyone that met him. Sending lots of love to all the Tyler family.
Liz, how many years have we been together I can't believe we've reached this point in our lives. We have so many memories to look back on. I remember when you and Johnny started dating when we were freshmen at UCA. I can't believe he's gone. I always enjoyed working with Johnny and you. Johnny and I had a lot of inside jokes based on the years we'd known each other. Only the three of us could appreciate them. We'll talk about them someday when we have time.
I didn't know he had multiple myeloma. That's what my dad died from, so I know what you've been through. Chaney had another back procedure this morning. He's still having back problems from when he fell off the back of a pick up truck several yers ago.
We're having new windows put in our 36 year old house, so I've got a lot of workmen running in and out at the moment. (My house is a mess!) I may have to miss the funeral tomorrow, but I'll be there in spirit. And I'll be praying for all of you! May God give you comfort during this difficult time.
Love you,
Susie
I enjoyed working for him and with him. Always so good to me.
Will miss him!

John was the brother I never had. He, and Liz’s family became mine. John was wise beyond his years, strong in family, and truly a Christian Soldier, if ever there was one. He had the compassion and insight that all true Christians aspire to. When we met, all of my family was all gone so he and Liz's family adopted me. We met while serving in the military, and of all the many things we had in common, scuba diving was the one where we truly became united. John was by far the wiser part of the friendship. There were several other things we had in common. We both were in education, John in Conway, and I in North Little Rock at the time.
When I needed professional or personal advice, John was always there for me. I could always count on him. He was truly a soldier’s soldier, and a man of Christ. Johnny word was unquestioned by all who knew him. His advice was sought after by many. You’ve done well on this earth, you were a beacon to all, Johnny, now rest in God’s glorious peace and we will all visit again one day. I’m certain, beyond the shadow of a doubt that the Good Lord has said, “Well done my good and faithful servant!”
Onward Christian Soldier, you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith.
I am 91 years old. I noticed the Thurman name ini Sunday's paper. I am trying to locate a John Thurman who did a pen and ink drawing of my home in Conway several years ago. I no longer need the picture (it is beautiful) If I clould locate him I would like to return it to him. Could you help me find him My home is in Little Rock ( 50 Wingate Drive -phone-501-786-9333 enter.
Stu always enjoyed working with Johnny as the Army Liaison.
I was sad to hear that Johnny lost his battle with cancer. He was always upbeat about his diagnosis whenever we shared our chemotherapy stories.
We offer our condolences and continued prayers for his family.
My deepest condolences to his family. I have wonderful remembrances of him during my exchange school year at conway senior high school. I will pray for him and his family. Warmly. Ludwig
Proud to say Johnny was my friend. I will miss him. RIP
I enjoyed being with Johnny on the senior golf days. He was always positive and a pleasure to be around. My deepest sympathy to Liz and the entire family.
May God wrap his arms around the family giving them peace, comfort and understanding.
Just know Mr. Tyler was loved by so many and such a genuine person that really cared for his students! He was fair and most of all very understanding. God Bless.
Johnny was a great guy. I remember working many ballgames with Johnny over the years. He always had a smile and a word of encouragement for every single kid that he encountered. Every time I have run into Johnny since he retired he always had a smile on his face no matter what he had going on. He will definitely be missed and the world will definitely be less colorful now that he has passed.
My sincere condolences to the Tyler family. I will pray that God helps each of you heal from this loss. Though the parting is painful, the reunion will be glorious.
A good man, I could always talk about any and everything, good example of excellence. genuinely carded about others. WONDERFUL to talk and share life's experiences after, retirement, if he saw you the conversation would, start and we both hated that it had to end. Well DONE SIR Well Done.
One of the finest men I have ever known
I graduated CHS in 1996. Mr. Tyler was a great principal and had a great sense of humor. He will be dearly missed. My condolences to Kristen, Clint, and all of his family.
Just a great friend, fellow soldier, co-educator, teammate and brother in Christ. We served together on the AAA board of directors which created a lot of laughs and memories. But one of the best recollections was when Johnny and I went night flying together in a national guard helicopter. Sargent Major Tyler enjoyed the ride but was ready to return to Mother Earth. We all will miss him but look forward to spending eternity together.
Liz and family,., so sorry to hear of your loss. He was a good man a good teacher and a good principle.
Mr. Tyler was a wonderful principal. Just enough fun and just enough seriousness. We always respected him but we knew he was good for a laugh. Praying for the Tyler family!
Johnny was nephew who was my sister's son. I always loved him.
He always made me proud .
Dear Liz and family,
I am so sorry to learn of Johnny's home-going. I have known him since college, First Baptist and each of our daughters at High School. He was always kind, considerate and caring. A true Christian gentleman. He has joined Ann and so many others in the clouds where they will await our gathering at that trumpet sound, to meet the Lord in the air. May God's peace and power surround you until then.
In Christ,
Ed
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during your time of grief.
What a wonderful man that made Junior High an easier transition- he and Liz both. I was chosen as class helper and enjoyed babysitting for them as neighbors, too. He was always kind and generous. May peace be with Liz and the whole family.
Mr. Tyler was my principal, my biggest supporter and fan! I worked for him in the office and he gave me the ability to learn and grow as if I was his administrator apprentice. Considering where I am today, I believe Mr. Tyler started me on this journey. I thank God for his presence in my life! He will be missed! Love you, Mr. Tyler!
I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Mr. Tyler. He was my principal throughout high school, I grew up with his kids and played sports with Clint. My Dad and Johnny knew each other through Conway football and school administration. Thankful for all he did for the Conway school system. RIP Mr. Tyler.
I’m so sorry for your loss. May God comfort your hearts during this painful time.
Coach Tyler, Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and love ones. I remember spending time, four years, with you as one of our main coaches. It was hot hard and dirty “ our practices fields back then were mostly dirt with a few clumps of grass here and there. You help all of us to come together and have a great team. You will be missed greatly.
We are so sorry for your loss, Kristen. We are praying for your family.
I am so sorry to learn that Coach Tyler lost his battle with cancer. I remember sitting in Mrs. Tyler’s typing class when he would occasionally drop by to see her. I still remember watching the two of them look at one another with such adoration. I am praying for the family as they move forward without his presence in their lives.

Kaye, Liz and family,
We were sad to lose our sweet friend and little brother. Johnny has been part of my life since he was born when you lived in the house next door to us. Kaye you are my best friend. Growing up together, you shared your parents, Johnny, your older brother Tom, your hundred cousins and I shared Gary & Mike. We were always a team and always together daily and attending all those brother ballgames just made us even closer. No one will ever take Johnny’s place in our hearts. In later years our kids adored him as their principal and Stanley spent lots of time maintaining his office equipment. We are so thankful for his life of service to God and his family. We will be holding you close in prayer in the days ahead as we say goodbye to our precious friend and brother.
I'm sorry for your loss.
Best of Wishes
I'm saddened to hear this news. Coach Tyler will never be forgotten. A good man on the field and even better off the field. We learned a lot from him back in the 70's. He was tough on us at times, but it made us all strive harder to be better. I will miss seeing Johnny. Always enjoyed visiting with him when I did run in to him. My deepest sympathy and prayers for his good family. Rest well Coach.
