of Cordova, TN
September 10, 1934 - July 9, 2024
Leslie Gene Welden, Jr., (89), born on September 10, 1934, passed away to his home in heaven on July 9, 2024 after a long battle with kidney disease. He was born in Hebbardsville, Kentucky and moved with his family to Memphis, Tennessee as a child.
Gene will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends. He ALWAYS had a joke (or 3) to tell and his beautiful smile and laughter will never be forgotten. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved playing numerous card games, with enthusiasm! Most importantly, though, Gene loved the Lord. He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior as an adult. In his later years, when he was physically unable to attend church, he spent most days listening to sermons and worship music on TV. He was a member of Family Worship Center.
After high school, Gene worked at J R Watkins and later at Exide, a battery manufacturing company in Memphis. After relocating to Jonesboro, GA, he owned and managed a restaurant for several years and then sold cars at a local dealership. After retirement, he moved back to the Memphis area.
He is survived by his children: Cathy Isbell (David), Karen Young (Robert) and Kay Barton (Ronnie); his grandchildren, Christy Young, Kevin Young, Jonathan Lovelace (Gladys), Stephen Lovelace and Jacob Barton and his 2 great-grandchildren, Emilia Lovelace and Jason Lovelace. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Cosby Welden (Doris) and Leon Welden (Tasia), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Leslie Welden and mother, Mattie Hardin Welden, as well as 6 sisters and 3 brothers.
Services will be held at Bartlett Baptist Church on July 19, 2024. Visitation will be from 9 am-11 am, with the funeral service beginning at 11 am. Immediately following, the graveside service will be held at Memphis Memory Gardens.
