of Marshall, AR
October 14, 1926 - June 21, 2024
Julian ''Jude'' Morris Horton, age 97, of Marshall, Arkansas passed from this life on Friday June 21, 2024 at home. Jude was born at home in Baker, Arkansas on October 14, 1926 to Crayton Horton and Walsie Jackson Horton. Jude married Muriel Ragland Horton and they were married for 77 years until Muriel's passing in February 2024.
Jude went to school at Red Hill until his high school years where he attended Marshall High School. After high school Jude was drafted to the army. He served in World War II at Okinawa. Later he became a military police in South Korea. When he returned home in the later 1940's he worked at drywall for several years before becoming a brick mason in the 1970's. His brick mason work can be seen on the East side of the town square where he bricked a spiral staircase. He passed on the trade to his son, Johnny Horton and his nephew, Billy Dean Ragland, who also became brick masons. Jude enjoyed fishing. Over the years he took many fishing trips with all of his family. He fished with his wife, his brother and his kids; but he also fished with his grandkids, great grandkids and their families. Jude had many talents which included knapping, singing and gardening. Jude attended several "Knappings" where people from all over the United States came to buy his arrowheads he had made. Jude made the arrowheads with original Indian tools such as antlers and sandstones. Jude was a renowned gospel singer. In his early years he sang in a quartet with his brothers and his dad, who taught music school. He sang all over the county and on the radio with Garth Brooks' grandmother, Nell Hedges. He would pass on his talents and love of gospel music to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jude sang in his later years at many gospel singings with his granddaughter. Lastly, Jude was a master gardener. He spent hours upon hours growing a big, beautiful garden. He loved to cook from the garden. He also loved to share all his prize vegetables with his family. He and Muriel had an agreement that he would grow it and she would can it so that they could have that fresh taste all year round.

Sorry to hear about Jude and send our sympathies and prayers for comfort to the family.
I have good memories of seeing Jude when he and my cousin Muriel and family would come to John and Laura (Freeman) Ragland's Store, which was down the road from Grandpa Roscoe Ragland's store out at Morning Star. I also remember when Jude would come out to Rock Creek and go deer hunting with my grandpa Will Holliman, my dad Doyle Holliman and me. He loved to get on a deer stand and wait for Will's dogs to run a deer "over" him!! Those are special memories for me about Jude.

I so enjoyed Mr Jude & Ms Muriel, all the stories they had! We all had some good laughs. Mr Jude would still sing along with CD’s even at his advanced age. He loved all his family so very much. Prayers for you all still here.
Jude , was a good singer we used to love to hear him sing. Him, and Lenard sang at Eddie’s daddy’s funeral, that was in 1983. But we never forget that they sang, Time has made a change in the old home place. And it truly does make a big change when family members pass away.
We send you all our deepest sympathy, love, and prayers. He was a good man.
