of Conway, AR
September 17, 1936 - April 19, 2024
Mary Lee Scroggin, 87, of Conway, AR, went to be with the Lord, April 19, 2024. She was born September 17, 1936 in Stuttgart, AR to the late Ignatius and Martina Selig. Lee was preceded in death by her sister Martha Jean Simpson; brothers, Stephen Selig, Herbie Selig, and Bob Selig.
Lee is survived by her husband, Bob Scroggin; they shared 41 years of marriage together. Her children, Allen Black, Russell Black, Reyna Black, and Jon Black (Rhonda Ayers); grandchildren, Brittany Black, Kayla King (Derek), Haylee Black, Stephanie Doak and Brandi Medrano; and five great grandchildren.
Lee graduated from Stuttgart High School. She was a 3 time all district basketball player, a majorette, and Queen White River. After graduation Lee attended Delta's flight attendant school in Atlanta, GA. She decided against that career to go back to Stuttgart and start a family. She raised her four children while teaching and attending the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (formerly Little Rock University) where she graduated with her bachelor's degree in education. Lee moved to Conway, AR and taught at Ellen Smith, while she completed her master's degree at the University of Central Arkansas. She then went on to teach the gifted and talented program at Julie Lee Moore for the next two decades. Lee retired from the Conway Public School District after teaching sixth grade reading for several years at Bob Courtway Middle School. She was elected Teacher of the Year multiple times over her career. Lee worked for the College of Education at UCA as a Supervisor of the elementary school student teachers' program before fully retiring a few years later. She also had her own jewelry business, ''Mary Lee's Designs,'' that kept her and Bob busy during their spare time for more than a decade.
Lee was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 40 years. Bob and Lee traveled all over the world to Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, England, Australia, Bermuda and more. She enjoyed staying active through aerobics and walking with her friends. Lee was an avid reader and always had a book with her wherever she would go. Since she was a young girl, Lee was naturally compassionate with a nurturing kind spirit. She showed that to her family, friends, children she taught, and complete strangers. Lee was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family with all that she had. Her radiant smile could always light up a room. Lee was a true gem whose love and positivity impacted so many lives.
