November 30, 1935 - January 22, 2024
Hershel Newton went to Heaven on January 22, 2024. He was born on November 30, 1935. He was a great Christian gentleman with a quiet demeanor. His words were few, but gentle and impactful. He was a lifelong member of Landmark Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday morning greeter and usher. He was the "Candy Man" for many years. His work ethic was unmatched, working at Federal Dryer his entire career. He retired at the young age of 85 to continue to spoil his grandchildren and watch Gunsmoke. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 30 years, Bonnie Shackelford Newton. He had two daughters, Tamme Kinney, Holly Thomas (Brock); son, Clint Tankersley (Lindsey); brother, Baisel and his two beloved grandchildren, Laikyn Tankersley and Beckett Thomas. He was their Pop and they thought he could do anything. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Flossie Baxley Newton; brother, Joe, Jr.; sister, Shirley Warner and mother-in-law, Louise Guest Shackelford. Special thanks to Dr. Brad Baltz and his entire staff for the love and care for Hershel and his family. Baptist Home Health has been amazing to help in every way. The funeral will be Friday, January 26th at Landmark Baptist Church, 501 Stuttgart Highway at 2:00 P. M. The visitation will be at 1:00 P. M. Burial is at Mulberry Cemetery. Bonnie, I couldn't believe the news when I heard about Hershel. But then I realized, he had just gone home to be with his Heavenly Father. Hershel knew you would be surrounded by your family and friends. Many prayers and peace.
Bonnie, so sorry for your loss I know he has been sick for a while and he’s in a better place but know you will miss him. Thoughts and prayers are with you.
Hershel was a very kind and gentle man that I am proud to know. As a boy growing up at Landmark, Hershel was the finest example of what a Christian man should be. It is very sad time for friends and family. May The Lord bless.
HERSHEL WAS A GREAT MAN& ALSO A GREAT FRIEND, GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY!
I’ll never forget riding with my cousin Tamme up to go see her dad at the dryer. He would always come outside and have a big smile on his face and tell her how much he loved her. I could see his admiration for his child as a father. He always had sweet things to say. He always listened to every word that came out of your mouth with such enthusiasm. He truly had the joy of the Lord in his heart, and he exuded it in his life. He is a man that Walked the talk for sure. I’m sure you’re dancing in heaven on the golden streets and your mansion is probably beautiful up there you will be missed.
Landmark has lost another great one. I cannot remember a time Hershel wasn’t there during my youth and as an adult. He will surely be missed.
Bonnie, you and your family are in my prayers. Heaven is rejoicing for another true child has been received. We know he is in the hands of his Lord. He’s met by all his family and friends.
Bonnie, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family
Uncle Hershel was loved by the entire Spradlin Family. We always considered him part of our family and he was always there first if anything needed from shoveling snow to car not starting, plumbing issues, Christmas toys being put together. He was such a sweet loving soul and we will miss him. Rest in peace sweet Hershel.
