Carl Lawrence, a retired Army combat medic with multiple combat deployments, passed away on Monday, May 8, 2023, at the age of 53. He was a dedicated father, a devoted soldier, and a loving son. Carl was born on March 30, 1970, in Geneva, Illinois, to James Lawrence and Alma Jean (McGuffey) Gray.
Carl served his country with great honor and courage as a combat medic in the United States Army. His bravery and dedication earned him the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him. Carl's commitment to his duty was unwavering, and he made a significant impact on the lives of those he cared for during times of conflict.
Aside from his military service, Carl cherished his role as a father. He leaves behind two beloved daughters, Cheyenne and China Lawrence. He was a pillar of strength and support for his children, instilling in them the values of resilience, compassion, and determination. Carl's love and guidance will continue to shape their lives, and his memory will forever be treasured by his daughters.
Carl was predeceased by his father, James, and his mother and stepfather, Jean and William ''Bob'' Gray. I am so sad to find out this news! Carl was like family, actually another brother to me, back in the 80’s when we lived in the same neighborhood. Carl was a good person and I will always cherish the childhood memories from the years we spent together in Batesville. Sending prayers of strength to his daughters and family. I will always love you like a brother Carl rest in peace.

Carl and I were the best of friends growing up. We were inseparable closer than brothers. I practically lived with his parents Bob & Jean. We were the outcasts at BJHS but we didn't care. Our weekends were filled with endless adventures and our paths were going to be the same. We both knew early on that our love for patriotism was going to shape our lives and it did just that. We kept in touch over the years off & on but learning of his passing has me very sad as I didn't get to say my goodbyes. I'll never forget growing up with Carl. My mother Linda was his 2nd mom and vise versa. We shared so many great memories when we were young and it feels like yesterday. So many parallels we shared in this life. About the only thing we didn't share was meeting on the same battlefield at the same time. At least in theory.
Till Valhalla my dear friend. I do want to correct one thing that I notice is wrong with a few of these comments. Carl never graduated. He joined the Navy and quit school before graduation. He chose the Navy first because the Navy chose him. Then he chose the Army. He hated Batesville high school and most everyone in it. He was the biggest kid in school but was bullied a lot especially in Jr high. We both were. I need to set that record straight as I know he would have wanted me to. "He never filtered or sugar coated anything" So to a lot of you and yes I remember you all. You knew very little to nothing about Carl besides passing him in the halls with your eyes down.

Carl and I grew up and graduated together from BHS. In our adult years we became neighbors. John and I often giggled when our dogs would meet up with Carl’s dogs at the fence and bark incessantly at one another. We miss hearing him yell at them to stop, especially Red who seemed to be the ring leader of the pack. Our deepest condolences to Carl’s family and friends. May the memories you have bring you comfort.

I've known Carl most of my life as we both attended not only the Batesville School system together but the Southside School system as well. He was a very patriotic and loyal soldier not only to his country but to his family and his friends as well. I will truly miss his energy, compassion and friendship!! The world just lost one of the good ones, may he rest in peace and God be with his family during these difficult times.

My brother since meeting in 1994.
Although your light has gone out, the light you've shown us through your grumpy care will always shine on through us that remain.
Till Valhalla my friend. Save me a horn of Mead and rest without pain.

I knew Bobby and Jean. Jean was my Avon lady for a long time. I can only imagine that she raised a son to be a fine man. I can only thank the family for Carl's military service. Not all men are set out to fight for their country. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
