Long-time Marion County resident Dr. Oran M. Carter died Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the age of 100.
Born April 21, 1922 in Stone County, AR, Carter was the oldest son of Fannie Mae Jones-Guffey and Naud Carter of Parma. Following graduation from Mountain View High School, Carter joined the Army Air Corp, where he first served as an airplane mechanic and then as a flight engineer for the B-24 bomber during World War II. In April of 1946 he married Lucille Jenkins and enrolled in the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. After completion of the pre-dental program in Fayetteville, he graduated from the University of Missouri School of Dentistry in Kansas City as one of only two students from Arkansas to be accepted into the dental program for the year.
The Carters moved to Yellville in 1953, where he practiced dentistry for more than 40 years. In 1965 the Carters established Tar Kiln Ranch near Pyatt, which they operated together until the passing of Lucille in 2012.
Carter was an active participant in his community from an early age, beginning as a Sunday School teacher at 12-years-old. After moving to Marion County, he served as a member of the Yellville City Council, Yellville-Summit Schools Board of Directors, Yellville Volunteer Fire Department, Marion County Hospital Board, Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Bank of Yellville Board of Directors, the Yellville Methodist Church Choir, Masons, Lions Club, Arkansas Cattlemen's Association, Arkansas Dental Association, the Jordan Milam Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, Marion County Board of Health (advisor) and many others.
Carter was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Lucille, his parents, four sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by son, Kenford Oran (Lisa) Carter and daughter, Marcy (John) Lovick; grandchildren, Nicholas A. Carter, Kendra (Josh) Rogers, Rob (Dena) Lovick and Tim (Francie) Lovick; great-grandchildren, Caleb Denton and Samuel Oran Rogers, Megan (Chris), Sydney and Peyton Lovick and great-great-grandchildren, Holden and Cade Galletti. He is also survived by three brothers, Dale Carter of Mountain View, Odell (Billie) Carter of Star City and Noble (Brenda) Carter of Lane, KS as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Monday, March 20, 2023 at Roller-Burns Funeral Home in Yellville.
Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Roller-Burns Funeral Home Chapel with pastors James Foster and Roger Rogers officiating.
Interment will follow at Layton Cemetery
Pallbearers will be Nicholas Carter, John Carter, Roger Rogers, Josh Rogers, Wesley Shipman and Steve Copeland.
Honorary pallbearers will be Yellville Volunteer Fire Department, Good Samaritan staff, Dr. Shawn Bogle, Dr. Scott Ferguson, John H. Lovick, Dale Carter, Odell Carter, Noble Carter, his nieces and his nephews.

Dr Carter was my first dentist. I was 16 and had 3 cavities on each side. He said we will fix 3 today and the rest later.
I returned about 20 years later to remove 2 wisdom teeth. Cost $30 total.
Dr Carter was the gentlest dentist I ever went to.
