November 14, 1956 - August 16, 2022
Kimela Deann (Barnum) McKnight-Cowell, 65, passed away from this life on August 16, 2022. Kim was born November 14, 1956 in Pekin, Illinois. She was the daughter of Dave and Marie (Berry) Barnum.
Kim married Roger McKnight on May 10, 1980. They were blessed with 2 children, Ashley Gray and Westin McKnight and later a granddaughter, Avery Gray, whom Grandmommy adored. Later she would marry Eddie Cowell and be blessed with step children, Jason Cowell, Nicholas Cowell, Donovan Cowell and step grandchildren, Aynslee, Jasey Fay, Casen and Caelyn.
Kim's love for travel led her on many adventures including Italy, Greece, France, Holland, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Amsterdam. Among her many other hobbies were gardening, cooking, fishing, hunting and kayaking. She loved the water and found peace at the creek. She also loved her fur babies and on one occasion even managed to sneak one into the church in her large purse.
Kim's career began in the healthcare profession. She was employed at the Stone County Medical Center, providing care for 32 years, until her retirement in 2021. Her passion for care giving prompted her to start her own private personal care business which was a great success due to her love and compassion for her patients.
Survivors include her husband, Eddie Cowell; children, Ashley Gray (and George), Westin McKnight and granddaughter, Avery Gray. Stepchildren, Jason Cowell (and Andrea), Nicholas Cowell and Donovan Cowell; Step grandchildren, Aynslee, Jasey Fay, Casen and Caelyn; Parents, Dave and Marie (Berry) Barnum; sister, Nora Everett (and Turner) and many other friends and relatives.
The family request that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to the Stone County Humane Society.

Prayers for all the family! Hearing of Kim’s passing broke my heart! I worked with her at SCMC and got to know her and ended up working for her with her aide service several years back. Kim had a heart of gold and will be greatly missed!!
Ashley, I am so very sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you and your family. Kim was a sweetheart and wonderful lady who seemed to always have a smile. She talked of you always and your beautiful daughter that she adored any time I saw her. Many many prayers do strength to you during this hard time.

Words just don’t suffice. I am so sorry for your loss and I am grieving with you.
I last saw kim and gave her a hug and told her I would see her soon at moms funeral a few weeks ago. Never in a million years did i think it would be like this. Kim was a strong and good woman. She was 65 going on 40 and she was a friend who will be sorely missed and thought of often.
Kim was my great grandmother’s care giver when I was a little one. She would occasionally take me out and spend time with me as a little girl. Then later on she was the one that I could talk to when life was hard, and the person that had me going to church regularly. I am saddened by her passing, but know that she has truly blessed those around her.
Eddie, Ashley, Westin, Dave, Marie, Nora and families, please know we are lifting you up in prayer during this sad time. Kim will be greatly missed. God will give you comfort and strength.
Prayers for the family.

Kim was such a vibrant person. She was my grandmothers home health aid back in the 80’s to 90’s. She became part of the family. When grandma passed Kim cried right along side the rest of us. Through the years she would visit with my dad and when one of the girls needed someone to talk to she was there like a favored aunt. She walked in a room she brightened it. She was a real one of a kind lady in that she was exactly what she appeared to be, a loving, caring , gentle lady. She was definitely in her calling as a nurse. We had drifted apart although the girls kinda knew where she was, I was even gonna look her up last week to see about getting together to have a coffee and visit. I’m saddened for all family and friends alike that we have lost such a vibrant really caring person. But proud that my family and I were graced with the ability to know her. She will be missed but she will be remembered as well she touched so many lives in so many ways.
May GOD be with the family Kim was a good person
