Dorothy Matilda Leelman, age 99, passed away on Thursday, July 7th, 2022. On August 11, 1922, Dorothy Matilda Leelman was born on a farm in Abercrombie, North Dakota.
As the oldest of 9 children, she learned the value of community and family that she carried with her throughout her life. First as a Lieutenant in the United States Army during War World II, where she nursed injured GI's back to health. And then later, as a mother to 2, a grandmother of 3, and a great-grandmother to 8. Meeting her husband at a USO dance in San Diego, Oscar Leelman. Dorothy and Oscar lived all over the United States, where she continued to dance her way through life. With a sense of duty, she never stopped volunteering for worthy causes. Those that were lucky enough to know Dorothy, will forever remember her for her iron spine, bright smile in the face of hardship, and of course, her peanut butter cookies.
She was a member of many organizations such as the Independent Order of the Oddfellows, The Rebekahs, The Good Sam Club, and many others. Frequently seen traveling with her husband and family in their RV, Dorothy has the rare distinction of visiting all 50 states and was never without an open invitation for those she cared for. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness that was the example of a life well lived to those that loved her most, including her little dogs that unfortunately liked to bite ankles.
No service was planned.
Dorothy was a wonderful intelligent person with a smile for everyone. I enjoyed many hours with her and will miss her greatly. I send condolences to her family and know her memories will live with us all, may she be dancing with Oscar now in their heavenly home.

My sympathy to the family.
We are going to miss this lovely lady. I can still see her dancing her legs off at the moose. she was a wonderful person and a friend she will be missed. But I am glad I got to know her. Guess god just needed another angel.
What a wonderful woman! I was honored to meet her while in the Red Hatters. She really loved traveling and told some great and funny stories. Great memories!
I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet Dorothy and hear some of her stories. She was one in a million! She was a lovely woman with a great attitude and a feisty spirit. One can only wonder how many lives she touched in her life during her nursing career and busy social schedule.
