of Jonesboro, AR
March 4, 1942 - February 13, 2021
Edward Lee Smith, 78, of Jonesboro, passed away Saturday, February 13, 2021. He was born March 4, 1942 in Riverre, TN to Edward Lee and Edith Smith. He was the owner and operator of Smith Tire and Auto for many years. Mr. Smith was a member of Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro. He enjoyed his work, fishing and hunting. Big Ed was proof that through hard work and treating people right you can be successful in life. He was trusted and respected by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife: Joyce Smith; son: Keith (Allison) Smith of Jonesboro; daughter: Kay (Jimmy) Spurlock of West Memphis; grandchildren: Jake Spurlock, Sara Kate Spurlock, Kallen Smith, Kerby Smith; sister-in-law: Eva Middleton and special friend: Joe McCadney. He is preceded in death by his parents. In Lieu of flowers you can make donations to Alzheimer's Association or Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro.
I first met Ed when he was parts manager at Missco Implement Company in Joiner and I worked in the office at Osceola. He was a guy who never seemed to worry about anything and always made me laugh. My sympathy to his entire family and his many friends. RIP Big Ed
At Wilson High School, Edward was quiet, unpretentious, always in the background, never intrusive toward the other "kids." However, the few of us who really knew him could tell the qualities which makes a man special were his. Edward was the tallest boy in school. He stood out not because of his height, but because underneath that quiet dementor God was preparing him to touch the hearts and lives of so many others. I still have the pictures of Edward taken on our senior trip to New Orleans. We walked in the back of our group, talking of what lay ahead of us when we returned to Wilson. Even then Edward, when one could get him to open up and talk as he was shy about doing so, exhibited the intellect of a man God would use to change the lives of those with whom he can in contact. I have thought of Edward over the years, remembering and smiling, for the quiet boy from a small southern town amongst the cotton fields, grew into a tower of strength and purpose, that of serving his family, his friends, and his God. I only saw Edward once after graduation at a school reunion. His eyes had not changed. In them one could see the calmness and peace only God can give. God had prepared a place for Edward long ago. He lived in a humble dwelling in the fields of Arkansas, but now, well, he has a mansion in heaven. Edward was my friend.
Mr. Ed Smith has been a Friend, Business Associate, for so long, wish I could remember when we first met in the 1970’s I believe. He is the MAN, when you say everyone who new him, loved him, and he loved all! So sorry for your lose, Will be Praying for His Family, and Freinds!
