of Memphis, TN
February 17, 1927 - November 27, 2013
Doris Ellis Bolick Hamby, 86, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. She was born February 17, 1927 and grew up in the Bethel Grove area of Memphis, attending Bethel Grove School and Tech High School.
It was during this time she met and married Marshall Bolick, and they had three children together. After their divorce in 1970, Doris met and married Captain James (Jimmy) Hamby, who was on the Memphis Police Force for 36 years
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who loved gathering everyone together, especially for the holidays, cooking a big feast and having everyone laughing and enjoying all the years we spent together. She was affectionately nicknamed ''BANJO'' by the younger generation of our family and enjoyed being called that.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah Harris and Wilma Gaynel Ellis, husbands Marshall Bolick and the absolute love of her life, James D. Hamby, to whom she was happily married for 20 years; and first cousin Betty Rowell.
She leaves daughter Mickey Bolick; sons Michael (Janie) Bolick, and Phil Bolick; step-daughters Dianne Sanders and Beth Jones; stepsons, Mike Hamby and Danny Hamby; grandson, Eric Bolick (who was her pride and joy); step-grandson Ricky Thomas, (whom she loved dearly) and first cousin Byron (Marguerite) Wilkinson. She also leaves behind other family members, friends and people she held dear to her heart that she referred to as family, like Diane Feuerstein, whom she called her second daughter for over four decades.
Special recognition to all of the wonderful doctors (especially) Dr. James Sikes and nursing staff (especially) Peggy at Methodist Hospital North, who took such great care of our mother through so many illnesses in the latter part of her life.
Visitation will be 10:30 am Monday, December 2, 2013 with a 12:30 pm service following, both at Roller Family Funeral Home, 3615 Austin Peay Hwy. 2 pm burial will be at National Cemetery.
"Banjo" will be truly missed by us grandkids. I have so many fond memories of her and my Granddaddy. I was so sorry to hear of her passing. Sending love and prayers to everyone. Christi
I'm sorry hear about your loss. May God words comfort you that there is going to be a resurrection. He will wipe out every tears from our eyes and the former things have passed away. John 5:28,29; Rev.21:4
Mickey, I am so very sorry for the loss of your mother. You did a wonderful job of being her caretaker for your lifetime. My prayers are with you and your family my sweet sweet friend.
Much love and many blessings,
Monica
