Billy Wayne BargerI am a Veteran.

of Searcy, AR

August 16, 1937 - November 5, 2024

Billy Wayne Barger, born August 16, 1937 to the late John Herbert and Hazel Mae (Bogle) Barger, lived the majority of his 87 years in Searcy, Arkansas. He also passed from mortality in Searcy on November 5, 2024 following a cerebrovascular accident, resulting from his "never-give-up" attitude.

Bill lived a fulfilling life, beginning with lifelong childhood friends, track team, football (state conference linebacker), vice-president of student body, senior class vice-president, Drama Club President, Key Club treasurer and Masque and Gavel secretary. He was a leader in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity during his college years at Arkansas State University, where he also underwent ROTC training. He was joined at ASU by his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ann Merritt, the two marrying in 1958. After graduation, Bill took a commission in the United States Army, where he earned his wings as a helicopter pilot, eventually chosen to fly then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Following the birth of their daughter, Dana, Bill and Pat moved back to Searcy, where Bill joined his father in a Phillips 66 bulk oil business. Their family grew with the birth of two sons, Steve and Craig. The Arkansas Army National Guard also benefited from Bill's vivacity and helicopter expertise, thereby flying governors and many law enforcement personnel. Hobbies included hunting, horseback riding and distance running, including a marathon.

Following 42 years of flying and retirement from the Guard at the age of 60, Bill emphasized his lifelong affinity for animals through an expansion of his cattle-ranching interests, including growth of his land, herd and horses, assisted by a succession of ever-present and adored dogs. In addition to the animals, three grandchildren also reaped the joy of Bill's huge heart. Weston and Stephanie, born to Steve and Will, born to Dana and son-in-law, Robert E. (Eddie) Jones, live as a sustaining memorial, inheriting his zest for life, passion for adventure, love of animals, strong work ethic and persevering "can-do" attitude.

Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandsons, River, born to Stephanie (Harrison Smith) and Mason, heir to Will (Jordan Selvidge Jones). His memory will also be cherished by countless loved friends and other relatives. A military memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church (Searcy) on Saturday, November 16th at 2:00 p.m. with interment and committal immediately following at White County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, November 15th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
