On September 4, 2024, S.W. Treat, Jr. of Marshall, Arkansas went to be with the Lord at the age of 92. He was born March 1, 1932 in the Cedar Creek community to Nola May Scott Treat and Stonewall William Treat. His name was meant to be Stonewall William Treat, Jr. but some blunder resulted in his name being ''S.W.'' instead, giving rise to many a disgruntled student devising their own suggestions as to what the initials could stand for - though one doubts said students were brave enough to call him ''Silly Willy'' to his face. His parents must have learned to check the paperwork more carefully when his siblings, William Glen, Johnnie Rae, Bonnie Fay, James Mason and Carolyn Ann came along, as they had actual names on their birth certificates.

S.W. grew up in Big Flat, Arkansas. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Air Force. After serving his country honorably for 4 years, he joined the Arkansas National Guard and obtained a degree in biology from Arkansas State Teachers College (now UCA), began coaching girls basketball at Big Flat and married a ''real pretty'' girl by the name of Janet Evelyn Bauerlein on May 9, 1958. S.W. and Evelyn welcomed three children into the world: Susan, who was mostly well-behaved, Steve, who was almost never well-behaved and Stan, who was lucky to be there considering that Steve preceded him. He began teaching Science at Marshall High School in 1964 and for 32 years he made certain that scores of young minds knew their trees and wildflowers and the consequences of falling asleep in his class which might include having your shoelaces tied together or having your class sneak out at the end of the period and the next class sneak in so that waking up was quite the disorienting lesson in the importance of paying attention in class. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ where he taught Bible Study and never tied anyone's shoelaces together. His attendance could be counted on from the time he joined the church and his faith was a clear cornerstone of his existence. After serving his community and his country for 32 years as a teacher and a National Guardsman, S.W. retired and was subsequently caught on countless game cameras with his running buddies, his brother Glen, Troy Morrow and Coleman Gammill. In addition to hunting, he hosted scores of fishing trips on the White River and always knew what the dam report had to say about the generators. He was the undisputed best morel hunter in the family, though a nephew or two gave him a run for his money.

S.W. is survived by his wife, Evelyn and his daughter, Susan. He was the proud grandfather of 8 grandkids, 11 great-grandkids and one great-great-granddaughter, for whom he kept candy in his closet, told countless stories to and most of whom still believe his tale that the town of Bald Knob was named for him.

Graveside services for SW will be 10:00 AM Saturday, September 7th, 2024 at Big Flat Cemetery in Big Flat, Arkansas with Bro. Darryl Treat officiating. SW will be laid to rest with military honors. Visitation will be 6:00 till 8:00 PM Friday, September 6th, 2024 at Roller-Coffman Chapel in Marshall, Arkansas. Bearers will be Brett Hicklin, Benjamin Weeks, Seth Treat, Dennis Richardson, Bill Ragland and Buck Mays. Honorary bearers will be James Tilley, Johnny Neel, Robert Novak and Gary Don Snow.
