James Michael BuchananI am a Veteran.

of Conway, AR

December 30, 1944 - June 4, 2024

James Michael Buchanan peacefully passed away early in the morning of June 4th. Jim (James, Jimmy, Buck) was kind and fun-loving and he dressed with finesse (often styling with a hat, blazer and sun glasses). Jim was known as a walking encyclopedia, who sometimes authored his own pages. He was also known for his work in food service as a chef and restauranteur for Remington's and Lucille's, Buckaroo's Intercontinental Catering food truck (before food trucks were cool), food service manager at Choctaw Indian Bingo and Wesley Village and he hung up his apron in the Pub at Austin College. His favorite pastime was being with his family. Mostly, he loved talking/watching football with his son, Justin.

Jim graduated high school from Bells, TX in 1963. He then joined the Navy and served two tours-one during the Vietnam War where he served on the USS Biddle. On ship, Jim traveled the world earning the Naval unofficial distinctions of Shellback, Order of Magellan and Golden Dragon. During the fall of 1968, Jim met his future wife at a party, Edith Jane DeWitt Buchanan. ''Our eyes locked from across the room and it was love at first sight'', Edith would say, always recalling the moment with a smile. Their long-distance courtship continued until they married July 4, 1970 in Alexandria, LA. The rest they say is history.

Jim is preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years, Edith and brothers in-law, Ace Fulmer and Dillard Rice. Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Justin (wife, Michelle); his brother, Jan Marcus (wife, Jan); his sisters, Sharon Fulmer Hance and Cheryle Rice Adams (husbands, Gary and Michael) and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends all over the world.

In support of Jim's wishes, there will not be a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Denison Alumni Association. Locate ''Memorial Gift'' at the bottom of the page. Identify James (or Jim) Buchanan as the name of the memorial. Your gift will go towards the Edith and Jim Buchanan scholarship set up for Denison High School students interested in pursuing a teaching degree.
