While in the Navy, he acquired his G.E.D. in order to be promoted while in the military service. He didn't prepare for the test and still managed to get the highest score that they had ever had at that location. He submitted to enter submarine training and was approved. He spent his four years of service in the submarines, based mostly in Key West, Florida. After leaving the military service, he traveled across Canada and the U.S. working as a welder. He attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with honors with a teaching degree. He taught welding at Vatterott College in Missouri and then moved to his hometown of Biloxi, Mississippi.
The family requests no flowers, but suggests donations to the disabled vets or wounded warriors.
