Virginia Lee Sutterfield

of Marshall, AR

June 24, 1930 - April 19, 2024

Virginia Lee Sutterfield, age 93, of Marshall, Arkansas passed away on Friday, April 19th, 2024 at NARMC in Harrison, Arkansas. She was born in Checotah, Oklahoma on June 24th, 1930 to Lonnie and Susie Williams.

Virginia married N.F. Campbell in 1949. They moved to Eureka, California where N.F. worked as a foreman at the Humbolt County Logging Company. They built a home there and welcomed the birth of their daughter, Beverly. Three years later, along came a bouncing baby boy, Phillip, with the cutest little dimples you've ever seen. Soon, N.F. became ill and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. As he fought this losing battle, Virginia remained a steadfast warrior caring for him and the children. With the doctor's recommendation, she loaded her husband and children into the 1954 Chevy and headed back to Arkansas to be near family who could help her care for the children as she tended to N.F. While in the care of her Uncles, Joe Dale and Donald Gene, Beverly learned so many new things, like pouring peanuts into an RC Cola bottle, going around curves at a pretty good clip and sliding across the seat of Grandpa Williams' truck and the tires making loud screeching sounds… and not telling Grandpa. Then, she would earn a Payday candy bar. Phillip was a baby, so he was pretty much limited in his outings with the Uncles. However, as time went on, he learned lots of cool stuff from his uncles, too. Beverly also learned to save her chewing gum by sticking it to the underside of the headboard of Granny's iron bedstead. She promised she wouldn't tell…and she never did. Phillip learned the art of a rumbling truck motor and backfiring mufflers. Yes, those uncles taught their niece and nephew all the important stuff.
Tragically, N. F. passed away in 1961 when Beverly and Phillip were 5 ½ and 2 ½ years old. Once again, Virginia became the strong, courageous member of this family. Because of these tragic situations this family had been dealt, Beverly and Phillip became each other's best friend and still to this day will be there for each other until their last breathes. Their love is a bond that will never be broken. Virginia married Ferrell Sutterfield in 1962 and moved to the house on Hamilton Hill where she resided until her death. Virginia worked as a bookkeeper for Searcy County Lumber Company owned by the Hubbard family and then later the Jack Treat Lumber Company. She was a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Marshall.
In 1988 Virginia's second husband passed. This time, however, Virginia was left alone. Her children were no longer at home. They had their own families now. It was much quieter at her house. But soon arrived her grandchildren: Whitney, Jason and Haley... and then Great grandchildren: Toby, Lily and Wyatt. For the next 36 years, she lived alone. But being the survivor she was, she faced this time with the same resolute determination as she always had. She was not afraid of the dark. She was not afraid of the snake in the house for two weeks before she personally ended its life and she was not afraid of dying. She made her plans to meet her heavenly father and all her loved ones one day. On Friday, April 19, 2024, she was reunited with those she loved. Because of this strong woman's intestinal fortitude, her family has survived and thrived, in spite of the difficult times. She was truly a warrior who showed no fear. Her absence will be felt for a long time. Lastly, to her grandchildren, she would want them to be strong, unafraid and courageous in everything they do and make their preparations for their eternal home.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband and father of Beverly and Phillip, N.F. Campbell, Jr. and her second husband, Ferrell Sutterfield; her three brothers, Earl, Dolford and Vernon Williams and two sisters, Blanche and Alma Rainbolt.

Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Massey (James Troy) and her son, Phillip Campbell (Debra); grandchildren, Whitney Branch (Beau), Jason Campbell (Ricki) and Haley Loggins (Josh); great-grandchildren, Toby and Lillie Campbell and Wyatt Branch; brothers, Donald Gene Williams and Joe Dale Williams of Marshall and sister, Vernell LaVance of Idaho.

Bearers are Beau Branch, Wyatt Branch, Jason Campbell, Toby Campbell, James Williams and Jeff Rainbolt.

A private family graveside will be held at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Marsena.
