September 10, 1951 - January 2, 2024
Larry James Pope, of Henderson, Arkansas, passed away on January 2, 2024, at the age of 72. Larry was born on September 10, 1951. His father, Harlin Hoover Pope, of Viola, and his mother Marion Rose Bowman Pope, of Henderson, preceded him in death, and Larry has missed them both tremendously.
Larry leaves behind his wife, Elaine, and two children, Jason Pope (Leslie) of Madison, MS, and Traci Garringer (Brad) of Mountain Home, AR, and three stepdaughter's, Belinda Long of Amarillo, TX, Shanean Graham of Amarillo, TX, and Laci Elgin of Hayden, CO. He has also left behind three grandsons, Ryan Garringer, Wynn Pope, and Hayden Pope, as well as step granddaughters. He has one brother, Ronny Pope, nephew Shannon Pope and niece Angie McArdle, all of Fayetteville, AR. Larry has cousins and family members who he kept in touch with regularly who will miss him as well.
Larry also leaves behind three beloved Shitzu dogs he called his puppies, and they will miss him also.
Larry played the bass guitar in several bands starting at the age of 15 in a high school band called The Nomads. He played on weekends during his high school years in Thayer, MO, with his father, Harlin. Larry was a Class of 1969 graduate at Mountain Home High School and kept close friendships with many of his classmates over the years. He attended Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR. Larry continued playing music in several groups in Mississippi and Arkansas until the last few months of his life.
Larry was an avid outdoorsman for many years and loved deer hunting and fishing for trout and bass, especially with his family. He hunted with his son, grandsons, and son-in-law. These are cherished memories. Larry's brother, Ronny, has memories of hunting and fishing together when they were young in Viola on their father's farm and in Henderson on family land. His nephew, Shannon, has childhood memories of his Uncle Larry taking him hunting and fishing that he can now look back on fondly as well.
Larry loved hunting, music, traveling with his wife and his children and spending time with friends. His grandson's Ryan, Wynn and Hayden will remember spending many trips on the Gulf Coast beach with their Papa. They will also remember his smile and the happy times with him. Larry never wanted to miss an opportunity to go to the beach with family or to visit his wife's family in Amarillo, Texas.
Larry gained his private pilot's license, learned to scuba dive, and took a taxidermy course and mounted a crow in younger years. He enjoyed learning new hobbies.
People who knew Larry well will remember his constant chatter about politics and his loyalty to the United States. He loved our country and wanted gun rights for all of us.
Larry had tremendous faith in God Almighty and talked regularly about his Savior, Jesus Christ, and spending eternity in heaven. We will miss his positive outlook and how he pushed himself even with chronic pain from Rheumatoid Arthritis and health issues impacting him daily.
Those who called Larry my love, Dad, Papa, brother, uncle, cousin and friend know that he is no longer suffering, but is playing music in Heaven, and we can look forward to seeing him again in our eternal home.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Roller Funeral Home in Mountain Home, AR.
