In Loving Memory of Matthew Powell Murray
On February 19, 2003, a shining light was born into the world and on July 31, 2023 that light was dimmed far too soon. Matthew Powell Murray, a cherished son, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend embarked on his eternal journey in Little Rock, Arkansas, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will forever be etched in our hearts.
Matthew's unwavering love for the great outdoors and his deep volunteer spirit defined him. Raised by his loving parents, Andy and Ginna Murray, he embraced the wilderness and the joy of lending a helping hand to those in need. His spirit resonated with nature, finding solace and peace in the embrace of the wilderness, where he explored his adventurous side while remaining true to his own path.
Matthew is survived by his parents, Andy and Ginna Murray, who raised him with love and supported him through every endeavor and his brother, Drew, his unwavering pillar of support and trust. They faced the world as a team and inspired each other to be better. His great-grandmother, Lucy Murray; grandparents, Tom and Elene Murray, Richard and Laurie Short and Dr. Marion Powell Hazzard, all shared a deep bond with Matthew, providing him with love, guidance and cherished memories that he carried with him throughout his life.
Matthew held a special place in his heart for his extended family, including his Aunt Emily and Uncle Jonathan Norman, along with their children Joseph, Elizabeth and Jacob. He also cherished his relationships with Uncle Curtis and Aunt Cindy Hazzard, Uncle Anthony and Aunt Kim Short and Gabe and Uncle Powell and Aunt Cathy Hazzard and their children Lindsey and John Groth and Sarah and Matt Sweat. Matthew was preceded in death by his beloved relatives: grandmother, Barbara Hazzard; his great-grandfather, Eric Murray and his uncle, Tommy Murray. Their spirits now watch over him as he embarks on his eternal journey.
Matthew was known for his frugality, resourcefulness and genuine love for animals. His ability to connect with creatures great and small warmed the hearts of all who knew him. Furthermore, his sharp wit and sense of humor effortlessly brought smiles to those around him, brightening even the darkest moments. Matthew's volunteer work radiated his generous spirit, as he joyfully gave back to his community, leaving a positive impact on the lives of others. His dedication to service led him to achieve the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, a testament to his determination and commitment to excellence.
Education played a significant role in Matthew's life and he was an accomplished young man. With an associate's degree in Construction Science from UALR and his status as an Eagle Scout, he demonstrated his passion for learning and personal growth. Graduating from Benton High School, he formed lasting friendships and left an indelible mark on the hearts of his peers.
Matthew's family and friends are invited to pay their respects and celebrate his life, a rosary at Roller-Alcoa at 6:00pm on Sunday, August 6, 2023, followed by visitation until 8:00pm. Matthew's funeral service will be 10:00am Monday, August 7, 2023 at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Benton with the Reverend George Whitlock officiating. A burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Avilla.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations to be made to BSA Troop 335 (HVUMC Scout Troop 335/6335, 15524 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, AR 72211), an organization that held great meaning for Matthew and his family, reflecting his dedication to community and service.
Though Matthew's time with us was brief, his love, joy and warmth will endure through the lives of those he touched. May he rest in eternal peace, a shining light forever remembered for his passion for the outdoors and his generous spirit that inspired us all.
