of Marianna, AR
May 19, 1942 - February 5, 2023
Carol Sue Mross Moore, 80, of Marianna, passed away on February 5, 2023, after a brief battle with cancer at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice Center in Jonesboro. Sue was born on May 19, 1942, in Hickory Ridge, Ark., to the late Joe Mross and the late Annabel Hawkins Mross.
Sue graduated from Hickory Ridge High School in 1960. After graduation, she was employed as a secretary/bookkeeper for a local business before moving to Marianna to live with relatives, Joe and Betty Traylor, in 1962. She met Charles Moore at the local hangout, the Porcupine Den, and they married on August 14, 1964. They expanded their family to include daughter Carol Ann and son Charles Jr.
While a young wife and mother, Sue worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for Clyde Andrews and Paul Moore at their respective Marianna businesses. Afterwards, she became an employee of the Marianna School District and served as the secretary to the counselor at Lee High School.
In 1972, while the family was living in Jonesboro as Charles was working toward his master's degree, he encouraged Sue to take her first college class. For the next seven years, Sue worked a full-time job, was a committed wife and mother, all the while taking night classes and summer classes to obtain her degree. Eventually she quit her full-time job to commute to Jonesboro daily for classes.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1979 from Arkansas State University and was named a Student of Distinction. She began her teaching career in the fall of 1979 at Lee High School and moved the next year to T.A. Futrell, where she taught Exploratory Business classes. She continued her education and in the late 1980s she received a Master of Science in Education degree.
After receiving her degree, she was named an elementary school counselor at Nunnally Elementary School in Marianna. Over the next 15 years, she was employed as a high school counselor in several school districts throughout Arkansas. Sue was a member of the Arkansas Counselors Association and the local Delta Kappa Gamma chapter. She retired from her education career in 2003.
In her retirement years, Sue spent time with granddaughters Camryn and Caroline Hart, attending numerous school programs, competitions and sporting events. SueSue, as her granddaughters and others lovingly referred to her, was always their biggest fan. She loved to work in her yard and was active in the First Baptist Church, especially with the women's and children's ministries. Genealogy became a passion, and she spent time travelling the state and region doing family research.
Sue is survived by her husband of 58 years, Charles Moore; her daughter Carol Ann Moore Hart; her son Charles ''Chuck'' Moore Jr.; her granddaughters, Camryn and Caroline Hart, and her devoted companion Chewie, all of Marianna. Also, one sister, Ann Mross Scott, of Little Rock and a host of loved ones and friends throughout the community and state.
A memorial service for Sue is planned in the next few weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Marianna or the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice Center in Jonesboro, in her memory.
