Clara Odean Whitfield

of Hot Springs, AR

August 9, 1925 - January 15, 2015

Clara Odean Whitfield, 89, of Benton went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 15, 2015. She was born August 9, 1925 in Bismarck, AR to the late Wanie R. and Minnie M. Burroughs Whitfield. She was a kind and gentle soul. She had a loving servant's heart and was always giving of her time to others. You always saw her with a baby on her hip - she loved ''her babies''. In addition to her parents, Odean was also preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Whitfield, and a sister, Oneeda Beebe.

Survivors include two sisters, Faye Powell (Charles) and Opal Castleberry (Leo), both of Hot Springs; two brothers, Farrell Whitfield and Bill Whitfield (Dorothea), both of Benton; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The joy of her life was taking care of and nurturing all the many children of her brothers and sisters. She was a mother to all her nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, all of whom loved her dearly.

Odean, a retiree of Benton State Bank, was a woman of many talents; singing, crafts, sewing, quilting, knitting, gardening and caring for her beautiful flower gardens.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2015 in the Zion Hill Church of God with Anna Jantz officiating. Interment will follow in Fairplay Cemetery in Fairplay Community. Serving as pallbearers are Dennis Castleberry, Allen Beebe, Larry Whitfield, Don Whitfield, Mark Whitfield and Travis Robinson. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Bob Powell, Junior Castleberry and Rudy Whitfield.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, January 18th at Roller-Ballard Funeral Home, 306 S. Main St., Benton (501-315-4047).

The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of Heritage of Hot Springs and Arkansas Hospice.

Dean used to come to visit with Waynie and Minnie, up to Mary and O.C.'s home, in Bismarck, Arkansas. A very devout and musical family they were, as was she, and she is in Heaven now.

As a high school student, I worked at BSB during the summers and Ms. Whitfield was one of the kindest souls I have had the pleasure to work with. My prayers and sympathy goes out to her entire family.

Dear Opal and family, I am so sorry for your loss. When Dennis was talking about his Aunt Dean I didn't put it together. I remember her singing at Zion Hill. Today as I was going through papers I found a poem by F.E. Burrow titled Zion Hill Church, written when he was 85. I also remember listening to Grandpa Jim Marriott's preaching there. God bless and keep you all. Robin Rascoe Briggs, daughter of Doris and G.H. Rascoe.
