Kevan Eugene Mathis

of Harrison, AR

October 18, 1956 - March 29, 2013

Kevan Eugene Mathis, age 56, of Harrison, moved to Heaven Friday, March 29, 2013. He grew up in church, the son of a missionary Baptist preacher, Gene Mathis, and Veda Jo Harness.

Kevan was known for his humor and his kindness. While he worked in various careers during his life, he found his niche during the many years he spent as a reporter for the Harrison Daily Times. Always able to see the humor in any situation, Kevan especially enjoyed writing a Sunday column for the newspaper, often writing under the persona Red Neckerson.

Kevan loved God, and he loved his family. He enjoyed riding his four-wheeler with his wife, looking for deer and other wildlife. He loved to putter around the house, working in the yard and taking care of his chickens. Kevan will be remembered by all who enjoyed him for his spirited storytelling, his love of words, and for his love and kindness towards others.

Kevan was preceded in death by his father Gene Mathis.

Among the people who will always cherish their time with Kevan are his wife and best friend, Pam; hsi mother, Veda Jo Smith; his daughter, Aubri Luckey, and husband, Michael; his son, Spencer Watson, and wife, Allison; his son, Ryan, Watson and wife, Taylor; beloved grandsons, Elias Thorn-Watson and Reece Watson; his brother, Kim Mathis and wife Arlette; as well as many other special family members and friends.

Memorials may be given to the Medical Mission, 1400 S. Pine Street, Harrison, AR.

Visitation was Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Funeral service was Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Interment was in White Church Cemetery.

I am sorry for your loss. We lost my mother this past Thanksgiving but we know that he is in a better place with his father. My family knew Kevan when his father was a preacher at New Hope Baptist Church in Memphis. He was always being funny.

To the family of Kevan Mathis:
I had the pleasure of knowing Kevan during a brief stint working at the paper. Kevan brought a smile to my face on a daily basis with a funny story, perfectly timed comment or just his positive energy. The community lost a ray of light with the passing of Kevan. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

My heart is heavy. I have memories of a little red-headed boy bouncing around seeing what needed re-arranging!!! I am so sorry I can not be there in person, but we are praying for God's comfort and strength for you all. My mother,( Kevan's grandmother) and Gene are enjoying Kevan being home, I am sure. Kevan and I worked together at the paper, and we pulled a few pranks together, too. The world is a poorer place without him, but I am grateful for the happy memories I carry of Kevan and the joy he brought me and many others. Pam and family, I am so sorry for your great loss. He was a good guy.

PC-John and I were so shocked to see where Kevan entered into eternity. It just breaks our heart for you. You loved him so much and so well. Oh, please know how we are with you in love and are lifting you before the throne of God for peace, comfort, and His presence. Just imagine my arms wrapped around you. Kevan is victorious - he's with Jesus! I love you so.
