William Irvin Burdine

of Harrison, AR

August 13, 1935 - January 30, 2013

William Irvin Burdine, 77, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 30, 2013. He was born at home near Red Rock, Arkansas, August 13, 1935, to Russell Burdine, Sr. and Linda (Davis) Burdine.

William grew up and lived the majority of his life in Newton County, AR. He graduated from Deer High School in 1955. William married Betty Loucille Hefley May 6, 1955 at the old Baptist Church, Jasper AR. They were happily married for 57 years.

William was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jasper AR. He enjoyed most outdoor activities, especially deer hunting and training horses. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was very active for a number of years as a member of the Deer School Board. William will be remembered as a great storyteller of local historic folklore, and could verbally paint a picture for the audience that would rival the best ''reality'' shows of today. Some best-remembered family stories involved his time, between the ages of 11 to15, as the chauffer for his father when he was sheriff of Newton County in the 1940's. Those stories started with the purchase of their first family car ''AFTER'' his father had been elected sheriff of Newton County. They took turns driving, as William at the age of 11, taught his father Russell to drive.

William was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Eugene Burdine and Clinton Burdine; his sister, Lela (Burdine) Kilgore; and his grandson, James Burdine.

Left to cherish William's memory are his spouse, Loucille, of Harrison, AR; his sons, Bill Burdine of Pottsville, AR and Boyce Burdine of Hector, AR; his daughter, Mary Alice Burdine, of Jasper, AR; his grandchildren, Amy, Hannah, Russell, Jon, Nikki, Pam, Hope and Noah; his great-grandchildren, Lillie, Maddox, Laynee, Jackson and Jaymee; two brothers, Robert Burdine of Harrison, AR and Russell Burdine, Jr. of Rogers AR; two sisters, Alice (Burdine) Bryant of Deer, AR and Linda Lu (Burdine) Loyd of Marshfield, MO; and many extended family and friends.

Services were held at First Baptist Church, 401 East Hwy 7 North, Jasper, AR, February 4, 2013, with Devoe Campbell, David Faught, Blake Matthews and Don Rose officiating. Burial was at Mt. Judea Cemetery, Mt. Judea, AR. Visitation, with the family greeting friends and relatives, was at Roller- Christeson Funeral Home, Harrison, Arkansas, Sunday, February 3, 2013.

Pallbearers were Joey Cowell, Roger Atkinson, Jason Brasel, L.C. Hickman, Daniel Bryant, Aaron Pawlonek and Josh Myers.

Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Stewart, Sheldon Walker, Larry Henderson, Howard ''Monk'' Hefley, Dr. Billy Frank Hefley, Dr. Jimmy Justice, Frank Bryant, O.H. Cooper, Jerry Humphrey, Jerald Sexton, Glen Smith, Ed Smith, J.W. Farmer, Carl Louis Cook, Bill Gore and Ken Jones.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church Youth Ministry, PO Box 407, Jasper, AR 72641.

With two plus years gone by, grief has became a daily part of life. Never knowing how much we miss someone until they are no longer here is true words with cruel meaning. Grief will never leave. Just as love will never stop. Wm left a legacy of style that can never be copied. He loved his family more than himself and with that being said, he expected much from who he loved. His expectations were never worldly, but biblical based. Right or wrong, but never both. His value on life was increased with every new day and days gone by. He took the best and worse the same and kept the truth as a staff to lean and lead on. Helping was never a question of if, but a question when and what he could do to help. Always including his wife and the mother of his children's mother in his ultimate decisions. Never doubting his duty to family and friends and neighbors and strangers. His comical and satire views of people's behavior could make humor a sense of coping with all that no one can change. The love of helping through "light" heart remarks without criticism but a "spin" on humor pointing out that none of us are better than another.
Following fathers on earth with truely inspiring hope bless our lives and the lives of others. The narrow road has hopes and dreams of good with each step forward. He loved his wife and held himself truly responsible for her well-being. His life was all about love and compassion.

enjoyed speaking with him at the Mt. Judea reunions. I
felt connected to him through Uncle Eugene.
I shall be thinking of you and praying for you to feel

The more enriched a person makes our lives, the harder it is for us to let them go. William was a great storyteller and I looked forward to his recollection of the local events he witnessed and the people he had known. We've lost a great local historian. His legacy will live on in the family he leaves behind. I mourn the loss of William Burdine.

This might not seem appropriate but wanted to share a story. Ms. Burdine was my high school basketball coach and William never missed a game. I think he really wanted to help coach. We were playing at Mt. Judea and we thought the refs were being unfair. Ms. Burdine was having a discussion with the refs and William was in the stands yelling hit him with your purse Lucille. He was one of our biggest fans! RIP William and take care Ms. Burdine.

My heart goes out to all of you. Losing someone that is such a wonderful part of your life as this man was in yours is never an easy thing.
My prayer for you as a family is that our Father will hold you gently in the hollow of His hands as you mourn the loss of one so loved.
... when we lose someone we love, we gain an angel whose name we know ...
God bless and keep you...
