Lt. Col. Glee Greenhaw Smyth (USAF ret.) passed away on August 5, 2012, surrounded by his family at his home in the Shaw community near Benton.
Smyth was born on February 22, 1919, at Marshall, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents Garland and Florence Smyth; sisters Bernell Smith and Mardell Armstrong; brothers Troy Don, Bob, and S. C; and great-grandson Hunter Jade Allen Adcox.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years Lexie Calestia Parsons Smyth; son James Glee Smyth; daughter Nathania Kay Sawyer; granddaughters Jenni Keisler and Brandi Smyth; and grandchildren Lane, Makenzie, and Montana; and brother Kenneth.
Smyth joined the Army Air Corp. and served in the China/India/Burma theater and retrained as a meteorologist in the Air Force. While he was stationed at McGuire Air Force base in New Jersey, he served as President Kennedy's accompanying meteorologist on Air Force 2.
After retiring from military service, he worked as chief inspector for the West Bend company in Sheridan until the company closed.
Graveside services with full military honors will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, August 10, 2012 at Ebenezer Cemetery in the Tull Community with the Shaw Fire Department Chaplain Ray Neal officiating.
Visitation will be from 6:00 8:00 P.M. Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Roller-Ballard Funeral Home in Benton (501-315-4047).
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be sent to the Shaw Fire Department, 5513 Hwy 35, Benton, AR 72015.
James, So very sorry for your loss. The Col. was a wonderful man that I remember so well. He will be truly missed. Prayers of comfort for you and your family.
Mrs Smyth, James and Nathania, Sorry to read about Mr Smyth's passing. He was a good man and will be greatly missed. I'll always remember his guidance and kindness as we tried to become farmers in the Tull bottoms. Our best wishes are with you and your families.
