June 15, 1929 - August 2, 2018

John Wesley Perkins, Jr., 89, of Little Rock, went to be with his Lord on August 2, 2018. He was born on June 15, 1929 in Maries County, MO to Ethel and John Wesley Perkins, Sr, both of whom preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Betty Perkins, and his sister, Dot Ryther.

John is survived by his 4 sons, Randy (Debbie) Perkins, Alan (Kim) Perkins, David (Elizabeth) Perkins, and Stuart (Donna) Perkins; grandchildren, Shelley Faulkner, Jerad Perkins, Jason Perkins, Ken (Mary) Stoner, Allison Taylor Perkins, Jacob (Murphy) Perkins, Julie (Britt) Mitchell, Mary Perkins, Anna Perkins, Caleb Perkins, and Hannah Perkins; great-grandchildren, Chloe Faulkner, David Stoner, Riley Mitchell, Maddie Mitchell and Elijah Mitchell and sisters, Bonnie Bassett (Don) and Pat (George) Ramey.

John and Betty met while attending the University of Missouri and were married on August 14, 1949. After graduation, they both taught for one year in Missouri and then John was called to active duty service in the US Air Force where he served during the Korean War. Following discharge, he worked for Swift & Co. Agricultural Chemical Division for 5 years before the Lord called him to the ministry. Following graduation from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary he served in several positions in Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, and then concluded his active ministry as a staff member of Geyer Springs First Baptist Church in Little Rock in 2004. During his time in Illinois, John led individual churches in their educational and building programs for the Baptist State Association. John and Betty developed close personal relationships wherever they went. John enjoyed hunting and fishing with his 4 sons, and he was proud to be a lifetime member of Master Gardener. John and Betty enjoyed traveling together with his sisters and their husbands all over the US. John was known everywhere for his servant leadership, unflagging faith, and quiet personal touch. He will be greatly missed by the countless people whose lives he touched across the country.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7 at Geyer Springs First Baptist Church with Pastor Dave Hughey officiating. Burial will follow at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 6, also at Geyer Springs First Baptist Church.

So sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in the words spoken at Revelation 21:3,4 “With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away".

We were privileged to work and visit with John for several years in Saline Master Gardeners. His sweetness and gentleness--and that
very kind smile and voice--touched our hearts each time we saw him. He will be missed, but he will be remembered.
