Effie Elda Steen

of Chesterton, IN

March 4, 1923 - July 11, 2018

Effie Elda Steen, of Chesterton, IN entered this beautiful world of God's creation on March 4, 1923 and she inherited her eternal home in heaven on July 11, 2018 at the age of 95. She was the daughter of the late James and Dortha Elfa Ferguson of Leslie, Arkansas. She was the granddaughter of the late Dr. Sparlin and Nancy Ruff, as well as, the late William and Ephia Ferguson.

On October 10, 1942, she married Glenn C. Steen in Marshall, Arkansas. Although he preceded her in death after 49 years of marriage, he was her absolute love and she honored and cherished his memory for the remainder of her life.
Elda, or ''Ms. Effie'' as she was affectionately known is survived by her sons, Conna (Rene) of Chesterton and Rick (Pattie) of Chesterton. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Sarah of Chesterton; grandson, Chris (Jennelle) of Valparaiso; great grandchildren, Bryce and Lexyss of Valparaiso; and many nieces and nephews that she loved and adored. Although our mom lived a blessed life with many rewards, one of her greatest trials was the loss of each of her siblings. She was preceded in death by her sister, Hilda Daniels; brothers, William (Sparlin), David, Vance, and Lee Dale Ferguson.

After she graduated from Marshall High School, she attended the Jackson School of Business. During her professional career she was a nurse, an entrepreneur with her own restaurant, and later retired from Jay-Mar Ruby Corporation in Michigan City, IN.
Our mom was completely devoted to her family and her kind, but firm, parental guidance set a pattern for her children to follow a life of love, honesty, integrity, thrift, and hard work. She was the best mom in the world and our family vacations to Niagara Falls, the Empire State Building in New York, a summer in Atlanta, and deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico taught us to believe that dreams do come true. She had a passion for reading, conversations, family vacations by car, and she made each and every holiday very special, especially, with her dinners and desserts.
Our mom was devoted to God. She was a member of the Open Bible Church in Chesterton and as a confessed Christian, she lived her life according to those principals. She kept a copy of Colossians 3:12-17 in her Bible and followed it's directives to be gentle, kind, humble, patient and forgiving. She was baptized and had accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior so her family and friends will celebrate her life and victory over death because she passed away knowing heaven was her eternal home.

A private funeral service will be held for the family. Afterwards, she will be flown to Little Rock and escorted to the Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall where funeral services will be scheduled there. Burial will take place at East Lawn Cemetery where she will rest in peace with her parents, siblings and our dad thus completing her full circle of life. The family wishes to recognize the third floor Progressive Care Nursing staff of Porter Hospital for their compassion and professional care. You were truly remarkable and the family will never forget you. The family also wishes to recognize our mom's best friends, Madelyn Flaherty and Peggy Johnson. Your prayers and hospital visits were instrumental for us to maintain the bedside vigils. Last, we wish to acknowledge Kenneth Ferguson of Fayetteville for his help in coordinating the funeral arrangements and escort from Little Rock. Arrangements are being handled by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. Online condolences to the family may be made at www.ee-fh.com.

Local services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 18th, 2018 at Roller-Coffman Funeral Home in Marshall, Arkansas with Bro. Jim Arnold Jr. officiating. Visitation will be 6:00 till 8:00 PM Tuesday, July 17th, 2018 in the Chapel. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Marshall, Arkansas. Pallbearers will be Andy Morse, Alan Ferguson, Kenneth Ferguson, Tommy Steen, Bob King, Cody Wray and Bryce Malamatos. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Gullett, Steve Ferguson, Kevin Ferguson, Mike Banks, John Steen, Brian Steen, Kevin Weiser and Lain Lewis. www.rollerfuneralhomes.com/marshall
