Paul Taylor Rhodes Jr., 96, died in a Batesville hospital, Monday, February 19, 2018.
He was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Paul T. Rhodes Sr. and Eugenia J. Rhodes on July 29, 1921.
Soon after his birth he and his family relocated to Fayetteville, Arkansas. He graduated from Georgia Military Academy and attended the University of Arkansas and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Paul joined the Navy in 1941 and he was assigned by the Marine Corps to flight training. He then was stationed in Ottumwa, Iowa where he instructed Naval pilots. He held the rank of Captain.
In 1944 he was employed by International Shoe Company. He married Ann Adams in 1946. They moved to Batesville in 1948 where he managed and was part owner of Batesville Equipment Company. He later was manager and part owner of Batesville Insurance and Abstract Company until he retired in the 1980s. He also served on the Soil Conservation Board.
He was a devoted Episcopalian and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Batesville. Once after Sunday services he answered the phone in the Parish House saying "St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Paul speaking." He served many years on the Church Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden.
He was an avid collector of antiques and many other things. He loved golf and won several tournaments. He shot four holes in one during his golfing years at the Batesville Country Club. He also enjoyed skeet shooting, bird hunting and fishing. Paul was also a "clothes horse" impeccably dressed at all times. His closets were bulging.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ann Adams Rhodes; his daughter, Ansel Rhodes Ponder and husband, Drew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Carolyn Hickson.

There are people that you meet by chance in life that impact
you in different ways. I must say I have had the privilege and pleasure of knowing and doing business with Paul for over 35 years and have learned ( he knew of the new model firearms before I did many times) so much from our visits. His friendship, our many lunches together, road trips, and advice will forever be remembered and cherished . I'm truly blessed by calling you my friend.
