Charles Wayne Roberts

of Memphis, TN

September 4, 1939 - June 12, 2017

Charles "Wayne" Roberts was born on September 4, 1939, in Mt Vernon, IN. When he was 16 he proudly joined the Navy. He loved his country and served active duty for 8 years. After active duty, he served almost 20 years in the Navy Reserve. He retired as Lieutenant Commander.
He was a licensed real estate agent, a certified teacher, ran for city council, volunteer voting specialist, held a bachelor's degree in business, from University of Memphis, was a business owner, and a mentor for the inmates at the penitentiary. He was also active with many community service organizations. Some of which were: Memphis City Beautiful-beautification of Kennedy park, Volunteer Memphis Navy-beautification of Pierotti park, Wolf River Conservancy, Raleigh advocate to the police joint agency meetings, and Raleigh Springs Mall committee advocate to help redesign the mall area.
On December 26, 1969, he married Dean Bell. Together they raised two sons, Reid and Mark. Wayne was devoted to his family and they brought him great joy.
Wayne discovered the true calling of his life when he became "Granddaddy". His love for his 3 grandchildren, Shanleigh (Mark), Mark Henry and Molly (Reid) knew no bounds. Much of his last days was spent bragging on his grandchildren.
Wayne is preceded in death by his son, Mark Roberts, mother, Iola Roberts, and sister, Janet Stevens.
Wayne leaves behind his wife, Dean, son, Reid (Christy), and grandchildren, Shanleigh, Mark Henry and Molly. Two brothers, Stanley Roberts and Don Roberts, and two sisters Mary Keown, and Linda Young all of Mt Vernon/Evansville IN.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St Jude or American Heart Association.
The Roberts family would like to thank the staff at Methodist North (second floor ICU) for their care and compassion. And the staff at Roller Family Funeral Home for helping us navigate this difficult time.

My oldest brother Wayne - He will be missed but also remembered in the stories we all have to tell about him. Being the youngest he was gone from the time I was a baby but in recent years I believe he learned to tolerate me and we made a few stories for ourselves. He will be missed.

Reid and Christy - thank you so much for everything you have done and how you loved him.

Dean - you have been his love his whole life and you have two wonderful boys that filled your lives.

Love you all - Mary
