James "Mule" A. MarshallI am a Veteran.

of Harrison, AR

November 1, 1928 - May 19, 2017

James A. "Mule" Marshall, born November 1, 1928, left this life for greener pastures Friday, May 19, 2017. He was the son of Orville and Ethel (McDonald) Marshall; brother to Albert "Red" Marshall and Lucille Marshall; and for 52 years, husband to Sue (James) Marshall, all who preceded him in death.

Mule is survived by his three daughters and their families, Arleta and Ron Kersh of Harrison, Tammy Parra of Tulsa, OK, and Micki Marshall of Harrison; his grandchildren, Jim Kersh of Harrison, Grady and Kayla Kersh (Catie, Chambers, Dani, and to be born, Raynie) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Guthrie Campbell, Quentin Campbell, and their father, Andrew Campbell, of Tulsa, OK; and many other family and friends.

Mule began his working career at age five, plowing behind a team of horses. He loved farming and "peddling" his produce. Spending his day brush-hogging his fields was his idea of fun. He graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1947. He never attended college, but insisted that his daughters must. He did attend Col. C.E. Beach's Auctioneering School and used his auctioning skills the rest of his life. He also took the Dale Carnegie course and attended real estate school.

Mule served on many local boards, a few being the then Boone County Hospital Board, the Valley Springs School Board (his only elected office), and the Board of Farm Bureau. Besides farming and auctioneering, Mule had been a car salesman, an insurance salesman, a dry goods route man, an army reservist, a basketball referee, a bank appraiser, and a bank loan officer. He took pride that none of the loans he made during his time at Security Bank (later Regions) ever defaulted.

Visitation was Monday, May 22, 2017, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home.

Funeral service was Tuesday, May 23, at Roller-Christeson Funeral Home in Harrison with Mule's brother-in-law, Rev. S.D. Hacker, officiating.

Pallbearers were Richard Bailey, Eric Friend, John King, Bill Lovell, Charles McDonald and John Suggs.

Honorary pallbearers included Tom Davidson, Jim and Marianne Hathcoat, Raymond and Wanda Rea and the staff of Harrison Rehab & Health.

Interment was at Starkey Cemetery (Old New Hope) on Wilson Springs Road.

In remembrance of his love of farming, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the FFA Chapters of Valley Springs or Western Grove Schools, or to the Food Pantry of the First Baptist Church of Valley Springs.

Dear Arleta,

I was so sorry to see your father's obituary. It was quite by accident, as I was looking for that of someone else. We lost Dad two years ago this month, and I know how it hurts to lose a parent. I'll be thinking of you and will say a prayer that, as time goes by, our Lord and good memories of your dad will help you as you heal. Love to my h.s. classmate.....Shelley

Mule Marshall gave me my first car loan, $1500. I was so proud and he was so excited for me! I will never forget him and his generous smiles. Through out his life he touched our family in ways that he didn't even know, but we knew him. Bless you all and be grateful for having had him in your lives.

Mule Marshall has been a part of our family for over 60 years. From the time JC hired Mule in the1950's to work at Hudspeth motors, to the scar on my thumb, that Mule gave me when we came back from fishing, then Mule was our banker, @ security bank many lunches with him an Elva, to being there with JC when Marietta passed away, in 1990, then of course buying watermelons.
The Last long visit with Mule was at Dad's Visitation, 4 years ago,
He could not quit talking about what a Great guy dad was. Of course, we all feel the same about what a GREAT giving Person, Mule was.
Prayers go out to the family

We were so sorry to hear of "Mules" passing & send you his family our deepest sympathy & pray our precious Lord will comfort & strengthen you during this very sad time in your lives! Mule & our uncle Lovell ( Ballie ) Ferguson were a team & called many sales over the years. If you never witnessed one of their auctions, you missed out on a wonderful blessing as they both made it a "Fun thing" instead of a dragged out boring all day affair! When we were able, we made every auction we could just for the precious humor they both shared. We, like you will certainly miss them both!
