To the family of my old friend, Steve Kenney.
I had just contacted Steve by phone about a month ago. We spoke for nearly two hours, catching up on old times and our current lives. Steve talked a lot about his kids and especially his grandchildren (as we are all prone to do). He seemed very happy, and was planning to look at some property to purchase, as I recall. We planned to meet back in Jeff in a month or two when I make my next visit there this year.
Steve and I ran together during my senior year and just after graduation, both of us dating girls still in school at JC (Candy Basinger and Susie Ittner). We played many sports together, including men's fast pitch for a few years, and I remember hating it when the coach would put him at third base. He threw so hard that I was always afraid he would knock me senseless at second turning a double play. I also remember when he was playing left field and threw out the other teams pitcher at first base.
He was a great golfer, baseball/softball player, and an incredible basketball player. I got better at all of these sports just because of him. We would also make several trips a year to Bennett Springs trout fishing, and to the lake for crappie.
Steve and I had only been in contact a few times since about 1972, but we always considered each other as dear friends. I am truly saddened that I didn't get to look him in the face, shake his hand, and say "Hey Newt" one more time.
I am sorry I didn't get to meet you, his family, who he spoke of with such pride. Please know that I share in your loss, and will truly miss this man who was a great friend, and a real influence on my life.
