of Grandview, MO

June 3, 1932 - April 4, 2017

Donna Joanne Cox Garrett, aged 84, was born June 3, 1932 in Lamar, Arkansas and died April 4, 2017 in Lee's Summit, Missouri. A graduate of Clarksville High School, Clarksville, Arkansas and The University of Central Arkansas, Conway, Arkansas, she became an editor of Modern Handcraft Publishing's Workbasket magazine, a homemaker, and a substitute teacher.

After college, Joanne married Alfred Garrett October 16, 1954 at The First Baptist Church in Clarksville, Arkansas. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary last fall with remembrances of their first date, back in junior high, at the Peach Festival Ball.

Throughout her life, she enjoyed being a member of The Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls, Order of the Eastern Star, Parent Teachers Association and being a Homeroom Mother at Conn-West Elementary School.

Due to her faith, she wanted to share God's love and salvation with others. Active in The First Baptist Church of Grandview, Missouri, over the years she taught Beginner's II then Fifth Grade Sunday School, worked in Vacation Bible School, was a co-teacher of the Berean Sunday School Class, worked in Children's Church and in the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) eventually becoming WMU Director.

Joanne loved traveling across the United States with her family and loved genealogy often combining her love of both on several trips. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was very proud that her ancestors were patriots for the American cause.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clyde Buchanan Cox and Beulah Beatrice Thomas Cox, and is survived by her husband, Alfred O. Garrett of Grandview, Missouri and daughter Donna L. Garrett of Lee's Summit, Missouri.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 2 pm at Oakland Memorial Cemetery, Clarksville, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Annie Armstrong Missions Offering at First Baptist Church, Grandview, Missouri.

Donna I know this is a sad time for you and your Dad. It's never easy losing a love one. But she is in a better place and walking those streets of gold with no pain are discomfort. She was was such a sweet and beautiful lady.
