August 28, 1924 - January 26, 2017

James Robert (Bob) Carpenter Jr. of Helena-West Helena, died on Jan. 26, 2017.

The son of Jamie Barbee and James Robert Carpenter Sr., Mr. Carpenter was a lifetime resident of Phillips County. He was a graduate of Tennessee Military Institute in Sweetwater, Tennessee and attended Baylor University where he played football.

He was a veteran of the US Army 2nd Division, serving his country in France, Germany, Belgium, and Czechoslovakia in World War II. In 1947, he married Dorothy Moore. Following his merchant father, James Robert Carpenter Sr., he became the founder and proprietor of Delta Hardware, now approaching 100 years of Carpenter mercantile ownership in Elaine.

As a believer, a Christian, and lifelong member of the Baptist Church, he served the Elaine Baptist Church in many capacities. He taught Sunday School, led the choir, and served as a deacon. Following his move to Helena-West Helena, for 25 years, he taught Sunday School in First Baptist Church of Helena.

Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Carpenter was a contributor to his community. He was a charter member of the Elaine Kiwanis Club in 1952 and a 60-year member of the American Legion. As a Kiwanian, he served as president, secretary, and treasurer. He was president of the Elaine School Board and a pioneer of the Elaine Little League program. With his fellow teammates on the Tri County League baseball team, he served as catcher.

Mr. Carpenter's involvement in the Helena community included a position as a member of the Phillips County Port Authority Slackwater Harbor Board for multiple terms and president of the Helena Country Club. A golf enthusiast, he was a life member of the Mississippi Seniors Golf Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Reverend Alvis Carpenter and his son, James Robert Carpenter III. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Carpenter; his children, Roxanna Carpenter and Gary Carpenter; his grandchildren Stephanie Trapp Francis (Edward) and Joshua Carpenter Trapp (Elizabeth); and his seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be held 10 a.m., Jan. 30 at the Helena Baptist Church. Interment will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a remembrance reception at the Pillow Thompson House immediately following the burial.

Gary and family,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Mr.Bob. It's hard to say in a few words what an impact a person has on you, Mr . Bob gave me a job and taught me many things that I use daily in my life. I'll always remember him for what an incredibly smart man he was. I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to know him and you all, God bless y'all.

To Dot and ALL the Carpenter family,
We just learned today of the recent death of your, and also our, beloved Bob! All the entire Carpenter family was close to our Quinn family and made our growing up experiences in Elaine very "Happy Days". Ellen and I both have lost our husbands in recent years and we would now like to send our expressions of sympathy to each of you.
Wishing you Comfort, Love, Strength and Peace and letting you know that we care!

I am so sorry to here of Mr. Bob's passing. Growing up in
Elaine I spent much of my childhood at the Carpenter home.
Bob and Dot, along with the whole family were always special
to me. Bob was always a man of uncompromising principals
and ethics. He will be missed greatly.

Our family was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Bob. With great fondness, I remember him and his family as active members of Elaine Baptist Church when my father was pastor there back in the 1960's, as well as a strong leader in the Elaine community and school. May God give Ms. Dot, Gary and Roxie comfort and peace during this time of grief.
