of Harrison, AR

May 19, 1936 - October 14, 2016

Dr. Harvey Orval Edwards, MD, age 80, of Harrison, Arkansas, passed away Friday, October 14, 2016, at Cox Medical Center in Branson, Missouri. Harvey was born May 19, 1936, in Bandera County, Texas the son of James and Ora (Stump) Edwards. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Ouida, brothers Horrace and Ray Edwards and sister-in-law Lou Edwards.

Harvey Graduated High School in San Antonio Texas and that same day went to the Coast Guard Recruiter and signed on. He decided he wanted to make a career out of the Coast Guard and attempted to enroll in officer training school. During the physical exam, he was declined entry due to a sarcoma on his right leg. He was referred to the US Public Hospital in New Orleans where he had surgery to remove the sarcoma which lead to nerve damage. He was the first patient to undergo single limb profusion in an attempt to cure the sarcoma. He was surveyed out of the Coast Guard as a result of the nerve damage and cancer. He joined his family in the Ozarks and decided to go to medical school and after taking his undergraduate classes, he attended University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

He married Ouida Lou Adelle Thomason June 15, 1963 in Little Rock. June 13, 1965, he graduated from medical school and did his residency in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. When he completed his residency, he returned to Texas and started a practice in San Antonio. During this time, his only child Benjamin Wayne Edwards was born.

He was a member of American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.

He later was offered a position in Jonesboro and practiced there for several years and then returned to military service as a civilian in Fort Benning, Georgia and retired after practicing in Pampa, Texas.

After retirement, he returned to the Ozarks and built his retirement home. There he enjoyed gardening, landscaping, building water features and was happiest when he was on his tractor.

He married Ida Ellen Sims Wine, who was a longtime acquaintance and classmate of his wife Ouida at Fort Roots Psychiatric Veterans Hospital, North Little Rock, September 23, 2003 at Ida's home in Hollister, Missouri.

He also enjoyed watching classic movies, reading about Civil War and World War II History, tinkering, designing and building whatever came to his mind.

Harvey is survived by his wife Ida Ellen, of the home, son Benjamin Wayne, of the home, granddaughter Madeleine Edwards, of the home, Ida Ellen's two sons Vince (Joan) Edgmon of Hill Top and Ivan Wine of St. Louis, sister-in-law Ramah Edwards, Ida Ellen's granddaughter Jolie Edgmon and a host of nieces and nephews.

I just discovered on-line the passing of Dr. Edwards in 2016. I was a R. N. at the hospital in Pampa, Tx. from May, 1980 until Sept. 2005. Working with Dr.and Mrs. Edwards, R. N. was a pleasure. What was so remarkable about them was their love of animals which we shared. They cared deeply for their pets and all animals going to all measures to care and love them. May Their Memory Be For A Blessing.
Respectfully, Katherine Gibby - Sparger, R. N. ( Retired)

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Uncle Harvey. I actually lived with Harvey and Ouida in San Antonio for awhile.
Greatest people ever. I actually remember when Benjamin Wayne was brought into this world. I would love to hear from any of his or her's family. Please email me and I will respond with my contact information. I would appreciate a call from Ben, Ida, or any of the Hickey family. Thank you for any assistance.
Rest in Peace. Uncle Harvey, and Ouida.
