Nettie Jane Goss

August 8, 1925 - July 17, 2016

Nettie Jane Goss passed away peacefully on July 17, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born August 8, 1925 in Plummerville, Arkansas to Roy and Ruth Burns. Nettie Jane moved to North Little Rock when she was five years old and it was her home until her death. She graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1942 and soon made the decision to become a nurse. She graduated from St. Vincent Nursing School in 1946 and began working there upon graduation. While working full time, Nettie Jane returned to college and received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the UAMS School of Nursing in 1966. She proudly remained at St. Vincent for 42 years, retiring in 1988. Nettie Jane was an active advocate for nurses. She was named Nurse of the Year by the Arkansas Nurses Association in 1965 and served as President of the Association in 1973. In 1976 she was appointed by Governor David Pryor to the State Board of Health and served three terms until 1987.

Nettie Jane first met Robert Goss at church when they were very young, but after he returned from the service they began a serious courtship and were married on October 21, 1947. This began their sixty-one year adventure together.

Nettie Jane's greatest joy was found in her faith, family and friends. She was an active member of Gardner Memorial United Methodist Church for most of her 90 years. She loved being a member of Gardner, serving as a Sunday School teacher, MYF leader, Committee Chairperson, UMW President, Bible Study teacher and faithful choir member. Nettie Jane proudly served as Delegate to the District, State, National and Jurisdictional Conferences of the United Methodist Church. She was instrumental in starting a health clinic at Gardner which opened in 2000 and is still open today; she volunteered there every week for 10 years. Nettie Jane was inducted into the North Little Rock Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 2008.

The family wants to express sincere thanks to the staff of Parkstone Retirement Center, Arkansas Hospice Association and numerous caregivers, especially Susan Ellis.

Nettie Jane is survived by her sister Aileen Flurry of Austin, TX; son Chuck Goss and wife Sally of Little Rock; daughter Janet Mitchell and husband Robert of Plano, TX; grandchildren Lindsay Fields and husband Chas, Kevin Brockmeier, Jeff Brockmeier and wife Jennifer and great-grandson Jacob Brockmeier. Nettie Jane was also blessed by her many nieces and nephews and loved being their Aunt Net. She is predeceased by her parents and her husband, Robert.

After a private family burial, a Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 22nd at 10:00 am at Gardner Memorial United Methodist Church, 18th & Schaer, North Little Rock, followed by a time to visit with the family in the Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Gardner Memorial United Methodist Church.

Love and prayers for Nettie Janes family and friends. She was a great mentor, colleague and friend the years we worked together at St Vincent and we stayed in touch for many years after. She was a true advocate for nursing and quality care and truly left a legacy at St Vincent and nursing in Ar. She was also a hoot and so fun to work with, what a great laugh! She could tell some of the funniest stories and often said, "I just need to write a book some day!" So sorry I can't be there today to honor her but I am so grateful for all she taught me and the support and commitment she always gave. I loved her and knew she loved her family, her church, nursing, St Vincent and her friends! RIP my friend.

It was my privilege to have Mrs. Goss (for that is what she was called) as an instructor at St. Vincent School of Nursing and then to know her in later years as a friend. She was a wonderful role model, always professional at work and had a delightful sense of humor. My life is richer for having known her. I pray the God of all comfort will enfold you, her loved ones, in HIs arms and that you will cherish the memory of this extraordinary lady.

I met Net 8 years ago when we were new to Gardner. She always sought me out to give me a hug every time we were at church. That sure meant a lot to me. Still does. How could I help but love her back?

I remember meeting Nettie many years ago and she was so warm and friendly. My favorite memory is her apple cake, it was the best I've tasted and I know won't be matched :) ...she always made sure a big piece was saved just for me. She always made me feel as if I was a part of her family and I will miss her so much. Heaven just received a very special angel; much love to you Nettie.

I was so saddened to hear of Nettie Janes death online today. I am out of state and would definitely be at her service if I could. She sat with me in the recovery room after the birth of my first child and since I'd known her all my life, it was such a comfort. Plus my parents were SS friends from Gardner. The hardest part about getting older in saying goodbye to those who mean so much to us. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
