of New Blaine, AR

February 4, 1920 - February 4, 2016

Jesse Garland Cravens, 96, of New Blaine died at his home February 4, 2016 after celebrating his birthday with his daughter at his favorite restaurant in Russellville. He was born February 4, 1920 in Shoal Creek to Jesse Lamb Cravens and Maggie Dotson Cravens. Garland graduated from Paris High School in l938 and married Atha Lee Wise December 23, 194l, in Scranton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 65 years, his brother Harland and his second mother, Ila M. Dotson Cravens.

Garland is survived by his daughter, Mary Julia Jones and husband, Kacy, of Little Rock; his grandson, Christopher Clifton Jones and wife, Tori , of Little Rock; his granddaughter, Jennifer Jones Cupp and husband, Eric, of Paragould; his great grandson, Christopher Scott Jones of Little Rock; two sisters, Wanda Cravens Clark and husband, Huey, of Fort Smith; and Emma Cravens West and husband, Tom, of Siloam Springs; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A World War II veteran, Garland joined the Army Air Corp in January, 1942. He deployed from Tampa, Florida to North Africa serving there and in Sicily and Italy where he was a Sergeant in charge of airfield crash crews. His military service was the source of many interesting stories including seeing Jimmy Doolittle land his plane near their quarters.

Garland farmed and worked in building construction prior to being appointed Postmaster at New Blaine in 1964 where he served for 20 years until his retirement in 1984. He was diligent in his duties as postmaster having once successfully delivered a letter addressed to "Grandpa, New Blaine, Arkansas."

He was a life-long member of Pioneer Memorial Methodist Church in Shoal Creek where he served as Treasurer for more than 5O years. He was a Master Mason, Elizabeth Lodge #2l5 in New Blaine. Garland was very active in the community and involved in many organizations including past president of Elizabeth Hall Cemetery Association, an election official for the Democratic Party of Logan County, a member of National Association of Retired Federal Employees and volunteered for many community projects. He especially enjoyed traveling with Tour Groups, attending dances at the Senior Activity Centers in surrounding towns and being outside on his riding lawnmower.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shoal Creek Camp, 571 Youth Camp Road, New Blaine, AR 72851.

People come into your life and a special bond forms. Mr. Cravens always attended our Veteran's Day assembly at Scranton school. I loved to hear his stories about his military time and also his time in the postal service. He and my father Dallas Johnson apparently had some good times at the postal conventions. Know that I am sadddened by his passing and know he will be missed by many! God Bless your family.

I am so sorry for your loss, Wanda, Emma, and Mary. Garland was one of a kind, and I know he will be missed. My mother, Ratha Lane, loved Atha Lee and Garland, and I always enjoyed time spent with them. Garland and my husband shared the same birthday many years apart, but I always thought of Garland on his birthday, and I probably always will. I stopped by to give him some old newspaper clippings about him that I had found a few years ago, and we had a nice visit. You are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

My sincerest condolences to Cravens family. May you take comfort in the words at Revelation 21:3,4, which promises a time when "death will be no more, neither will mourning, nor outcry, nor pain be anymore." God will surely fulfill this promise and comfort you during this difficult time.

I have a lot of fond memories of time spent at your house when we were young. Know that he had a good and full life and now will rest in peace with our creator in heaven. My dad, Guyth Rogers (Scranton) always spoke very highly of Mr. Cravens. He had a lot of stories to share. We owned Dari Delite in Paris for a few years and he would come in and order beans & Cornbread!! Sorry for your loss. 96 years is a real good life time! Enjoy your memories!

Mary, Wanda and Emma:
So sorry to hear of Garlands passing. He was a wonderful
Christian gentleman and to live 96 years and pass on his birthday
was astonishing. Just know he has seen the face of Jesus
and is dancing all over heaven with Atha. May you have comfort and peace during this difficult time.
