''Duke'' Julius Orvin Hightower, age 80 of Howard, Colorado, formerly of Leslie, Arkansas departed this life to be with God on Tuesday, September 1st, 2015. He was born in Luxora, Arkansas on November 26th, 1934 to John Melvin and Jewel Alene (Fowler) Hightower.
Duke was a proud member of the elite U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. After returning from military service, Duke married Kathryn Sharp, his loving wife of 57 years. After a long career as a Heavy Equipment and Arkansas River tugboat operator, Duke retired to ranching and outdoor activities in the mountains of Colorado. He was most grateful for his relationship with Jesus Christ. Duke was a member of the Teller and Dodge Church of Christ in Salida, Colorado and was a great example to his children and grandchildren of what a faithful Christian should be.
Duke was passionate for his family and is survived by his wife, Kathryn of the home; sons, John Hightower and wife Melissa of Salida, CO and Jesse Hightower and wife Claudia of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Yvette Garcia and husband Alfonso of Durango, CO; grandchildren, ''Johnny'' John Hightower Jr. and wife Jessica, Joshua Hightower and wife Gosia, Jacob Hightower and wife Jordan, Joseph Noah Hightower, Jessica Nicole Hightower, Justin Hightower, Jenna Albright and husband Carson, Katarina Garcia and Easton Garcia; great-grandchildren, Victoria Hightower, ''Johann'' John Hightower III, Dylan Hightower, Evan Hightower, Lucan Hightower, Wyatt Duke Hightower and his sibling on the way; brother, Henry Hightower; and sisters, Carol Halpain and Joy Eldridge.
Duke was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Hightower.
Graveside services for Duke will be 2:00 PM Saturday, September 5th, 2015 at Pine Grove Cemetery, 5750 Trace Ridge Road, Leslie, Arkansas with Bro. Keith Sharp officiating. Duke will be missed. It was an honor to get to know him over the years. He cared deeply for his friends and family and we are all saddened by his loss. We are all better people for getting to share in his friendship. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family.
